looking up place of birth
« on: Monday 28 March 16 14:46 BST (UK) »
Is there anybody who could look up a place of birth and the parents of Abraham Slack  who was born around 1820/22 and James Slack who I think was his brother and was born about 1822/24 in Norbury Staffordshire. On the 1841 and 1851 census it says they were born in Staffordshire, but later census' say they were born in Wildborclough Cheshire.  I need this info to find out who his parents were, and also to find out where James is buried.  He died on the 13th February 1898 in Macclesfield Cheshire, but James Slack 1822/24 - 1898 is not listed as being buried in Macclesfield Cheshire.  Any help , please.  thank you

In addition to the Staffordshire baptism found by Hepburn --- and just to put the 'cat amongst the pigeons' - there are the following 2 baptisms in Cheshire;

Abraham Slack baptised 15 June 1819 at Prestbury - abode Tytherington - Parents Thomas Slack, Farmer and Sarah.

James Slack baptised 1 Apr 1821 --- other details exactly the same as those for Abraham.

If it helps:

Wildboarclough (pronounced Will'berclough) was a township and chapelry in Prestbury ancient parish, Macclesfield hundred (SJ 9869), which became a civil parish in 1866.

Have you tried locating James & Abraham's marriages to see who they name as their father  :-\

You say James was possibly bn Norbury - 1861 ( RG9/2585 f70 p14) has Wife Margaret.
Possible marriage in 1854 to Margaret Kemp, gives father as James Slack

Thanks for looking up info re James & Abraham Slack.  I don't think the James & Abraham are the ones I am looking for, although I do agree they were born about the time I am looking at.    On the census forms it states Tytherington , and there father is a farmer.    I have searched this line and don't thin k this is them.  I do have James' marriage cert, when he married Margaret Kemp in 1854 and on it it says that his father is also called James and he is a labourer.    I am now getting frustrated with the search, but don't like giving up, as I would love to go further back but with his place of birth and his mother and father quite illusive I will keep plodding on.

Chestnut -- can you just clarify please --- are you saying that on the census records the birth place is Tytherington?

The Cheshire parish register is also saying Tytherington - and the father is a Farmer -- the dates of birth are approximately correct. This applies to both Abraham and James. It's a bit of a coincidence.

On James' marriage it is saying his father is James - might that be an error in that the groom's name may have been repeated?
Do you, by chance, have any marriage details for Abraham?
Also - the eldest son is often named after the father's father - do you happen to know the names of the eldest son of your James and Abtaham please?

Sorry about all the questions!

On the Find My Past website there is a downloadable Will for a Thomas Slack, Farmer of Sutton - dated 1861 -- in which he refers to his deceased son Abraham.

In addition - in 1860 - there is a downloadable Will for an Abraham Slack - of Sutton.

They may just be worth looking at -- both are quite lengthy and go on a bit!
If you don't have access to Find My Past - you can often access it at Libraries.

Go to Search
Select Births Marriages Deaths
Input name
Input location as Cheshire
Select Sub Category of Wills and Probate

You can download the actual Wills and see what you think. (I haven't checked for James - or for Sarah (wife of Thomas).
