Sarah Richardson b 1819 to 1821 always says she was born Selby

After looking at the 1846 marriage register, Sarah Richardson was from Sculcoates parish and John Hood from Selby parish.

There is a baptism in Selby Sarah daughter  of ~~~ Page  117 entry 932 ~ William & Mary Richardson a watchmaker bapt 16th Aug 1819 in the abbey  (can't find her on 1841c in Selby)

1841c Gibson's Square (A yard on maps) Sculcoates

Does not say relationship but oldest children usually start first the work down to youngest
Sarah Richardson aged 20 come well down the list (Could be niece )

 :)
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hello All

Thank you Bumblebee for the Charles Hood (b. Selby 1858) confirmation (married twice, second marriage in 1887 to a - Hannah Richardson) and additional information.

Charles Hood and the unknown Emma Hirst, visitor?
I'm also interested in Emma Hirst "M" "visitor" born Ledsham, Yorkshire, in the Charles Hood household (1891), in the adjacent Census, to find out her husband was. Please see Reply 50.

Richardson's of Sutton, Kingston upon Hull (1841) and John & Sarah Hood of Selby
Thank you dobfarm for reply and accompanying email, good detective work too. My 1851 Census and onward for John and Sarah Hood of Selby says Sarah was born Selby.

Jno Richardson and Hannah Richardson in your Sutton on Hull 1841 Census, are possibly the witnesses on the John Hood, Marriage Certificate (extract attached).

Neighbour - Thomas Gibson and two Cooper Members of Gibson Household
Interesting the neighbour Gibson's were born Scotland. Thanks for the info.

Selby Graves of John Hood, Tanner and Sarah Hood (nee Richardson)
Be interesting to see if anything of interest is on their Headstones at Selby Cemetery. (When we were at Beverley the swing railway bridge had closed the line).

Recent info from Selby Town Council ...
John Hood, Tanner, dying Dec 1860 was Burial 242; 13 [no column title]; Grave 1531; 16 [no column title].
George Hood, Farmer, dying Jan 1862, was Burial 359; 19 [no column title; Grave 615; 19 [no column title].

Selby Quaker Burial Ground
Photo of the Selby Quaker Burial Ground is here ...

A burial place was specifically reserved for Jane Hood alias Jane Casson Hood (widow of Wm Hood d.1870, aged 54), after the Selby Burial Ground Closure circa 1887.

Regards Mark

EDIT:
My Selby transcriptions only go to 1812, but found this re a John Richardson (might not be the same).

Baptism of Robert Hawcroft 13 May 1811 ...
Wm son of Thos Hawcroft of Hambleton by Mary dau of Timothy Middleton.
Jane dau of Robt Conkey, Gardiner of Whitehaven in Cumberland by Katherine dau of John Richardson of Whitehaven.
Born 11th May.

I read a post thread a while ago of which, as usual can't re-find it, but in brief from memory : The lady was looking for a burial in Skipton 1848, the parish register burials seemed to dry up as hit and miss around that time into an overspill burial ground & later the overspill burial ground turned into Skipton council cemetery which opened 1860's officially The 1848 burial was recorded in separate earliest interim register of the church overspill ground  (Parish register  covered an area) council cemetery records .

Therefore did Selby council pre 1858 cemetery ground start its life as the Abbey interim burial overspill cemetery used around 1845 (Again Parish register coverage was an area of chapel/churchs)
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Thanks dobfarm

Regarding Selby Cemetery (Council Cemetery), it seems the earliest/first burials are late 1850s, but something from the Selby Council Register transcription, how can the John Hood, Tanner burial of December 1860 have a higher Grave Number, than the George Hood (Farmer) and his son burials, in 1862.
Unless, the Selby Cemetery was already sectioned and the two Hood 1862 burials are in the next Section.

Recent info from Selby Town Council, re Selby Cemetery ...
John Hood, Tanner, dying Dec 1860 was Burial 242; 13 [no column title]; Grave 1531; 16 [no column title].
George Hood, Farmer, dying Jan 1862, was Burial 359; 19 [no column title; Grave 615; 19 [no column title].

A reference in the Burnley Advertiser 6th June 1857, to the Selby Advertiser, perhaps there are more comments about Selby burials in the corresponding Selby Advertiser copies, if they survive.

Regards Mark

EDIT:
Regarding the inquiry to WYAS Leeds, they have never heard of the Selby Abbey Sexton's Book.
I'm trying Leeds City Archives.

George and William are in the unconsecrated section.  John in the consecrated section.

As far as the discovery of the ancient burial ground on Church Hill, whilst interesting, unfortunately will have no bearing on the burial whereabouts of your George.

We'll have to try to track down the year the Selby advertiser started publishing and who if any repository holds 19th century copies of the newspapers on micro film if it goes back to 1857 known date. (From the Burnley Advertiser 6th June 1857)

Try the British Lending Library at Boston Spa they may know about the "Selby Advertiser."  .    North Yorkshire Local Libraries don't hold the "Selby Advertiser".

Hi

The Selby Times and Howdenshire and Goole Advertiser 1869 to 1958
Later Title: Selby Times no. 5130- (25 July 1958-)

There has been a past appeal by Selby Library for earlier copies of the Selby Times.

North Yorks RO, via TNA ... Selby Times 1860-1936 (incomplete), 1988-1990, 1993-99 [MIC 2762-63, 2771, 2783, 3051, 3225, 3679-80, 3825-26, 3870, 3950-51, 4011-12]

The Selby Express, etc.

Yes Goughy is right, sadly for us here, the British Newspaper Library was moved to Wetherby Yorkshire.

You must register for a full Reader Pass to use our Reading Room. Address. The British Library Boston Spa Wetherby West Yorkshire LS23 7BQ

They were very strict over ID, a Dutch chap was going ballistic at BL Euston / St Pancras, because he turned up without sufficient ID. He couldn't prove his temporary (Hotel) address either.

The previous week two people had been convicted for cutting plates from books ...
