Hello

My four times Gt. Grandfather was George Hood of Selby, Yorkshire, England, who married Sarah Russel at Selby in July 1815. They had five sons and three daughters baptised at Selby.

Their son William Hood married Jane Casson at Scarborough in December 1851 and was known as Jane Hood and Jane Casson Hood, of Wren Lane, Selby, laterly Byefield alias Byfield, Selby and Brayton, Yorkshire, according to our Hood Family papers and that both were understood to be buried in the Quaker Burial Ground at Selby, Yorkshire, England, UK.

They had three children Edwin Hood, Marion Hood (who became the wife of George Scaum of Pontefract, called Marion Scaum) and Beatrice Hood.

I understand Jane Casson Hood held family papers in the 1880s, which are still held by a Casson family member in the USA.

I would be most grateful please, if your family papers shed any light on William Hood's father, known as 'George Hood of Selby' in 1815, or even, where George Hood was buried when he died at Selby 18th September 1845?

I attach something, we have in our Family Papers, which survive.

Perhaps you will be kind enough to reply? Thank you.

Kind regards, Mark Hood

Hood  ? / Russel (-Hat makers - Milliners) in business general knowledge skills pre 1812 (as Milliner Hood's pop up in Finkle Street Selby in census years later)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In exceptions; a baptism is not always the same year or even same decade and not always the place/parish of birth.
Sarah Richardson marriage to John Hood born/bapt Selby 1846 Sculcoates near Hull ( Why  ??? not Selby)
In censuses post 1851 Sarah Hood nee Richardson, says she was born in Selby and in one census post John's death, is living with her sister who also was born Selby.
So why was John H and Sarah R married in Sculcoates 1846 and John's brother William missing off the 1851c 5 years later bearing in mind Hull is just a days tidal river boat ride from Selby docks to Drypool docks Hull.
Have you got Sarah Richardson baptism and her fathers name off the 1846 marriage certificate of John H and Sarah R
What was cause death Sarah Hood nee Russel 1879 Selby (old age / natural decay ? )
What was cause death  George Hood 1845 Selby (blood circulation / heart trouble  ? )
Some interest stuff coming up on John Hood's (Marr 1846 to Sarah R) kids and John's business interest
also James Hood business
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
Hello dobfarm and All
Re 16th Aug 1846 Sculcoates Marriage of John Hood, Tanner in the Parish of Selby and Sarah Richardson (now online), it must have been a 'shotgun marriage' as George Hood (my 2 X Gt. G.) was born 31st January 1847 at Selby (to the above couple) and have GRO Birth Certificate (not baptism).
I think the shame back then likely forced their marriage away at St Mary's, Parish of Sculcoates. There is no Father's name, nor Occupation (GRO full Certificate and no newspaper announcement), but the Witnesses were John Richardson and Hannah Richardson.
John aged 41 and Sarah Hood aged 66 above were buried Selby Cemetery in 1860 and 1886 both in grave 1531. Cemetery opened abt 1858.
George Hood aged 37 the farmer of Byefield and Bondgate, Selby, was buried January 1862 and William [his son] 24 year [should be month] old son "Son of Ann" in burial register, July 1862, both in grave 615. Seems Ann Hood widow went on to remarry, becoming Ann Knott (traced in Census by son Charles Hood, son aged 2 in 1861 and 12 years in 1871, both born Selby).
Son Charles Hood born Selby 1858 became a Railway Signalman with three children born Castleford, Yorkshire by 1891. Charles wife Hannah Hood was born at Hirst[?] and Emma Hirst a "Visitor" and Married was born Ledsham, Yorkshire and aged 57 in 1891.
George Hood (d. 18th Sept 1845) "Disease of the Heart 18 months certified", got no other information. Burial place unknown.
George Hood's widow, still called Sarah Hood at death (nee Sarah Russell) dying Selby aged 86 years 28th November 1879 at 11 Gowthorpe, Certificate says "Senile Decay certified by Joseph Todd MRCS" & "Jane Hood Daughter in Law Present at death Selby". Sarah Hood - Burial place unknown.
Its possible Sarah Richardson was born in Selby but her parents moved to Sculcoates by 1846
No parents name on the 1846 marriage of John H and Sarah R; could be (We known George Hood died 1845 year before) so Sarah's father probably also deceased by 1846 and vicar left the fathers  box blank
So John H losses his father the year before 1845 and get his girlfriend Sarah R pregnant then runs off to Sculcoates to get married 1846 -Strange! the plot thickens.
Possible the parents of both the couples families left alive all living in Selby, did not approve of the couple marring.
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
Charles Hood born Selby June Qtr 1858 became a Railway Signalman and several children were born Castleford, Yorks. Charles wife Hannah Hood was born at Hirst[?].
Emma Hirst a Visitor in the 1891 Census was born Ledsham, Yorks and married, aged 57 [or 59].
Interested in the "Visitor" Emma Hirst in the 1891 Census?
What was the full name Emma Hirst's husband and his place of birth in the adjacent Census please? Trying to work out her maiden name?
Thanks, Mark
Seems this Charles Hood of Selby married twice in the 1880s.
Charles Hood & Martha Winter, MARRIAGE in the District of Selby, June 1884 Qtr.
Allan Winter Hood, BIRTH in the District of Pontefract, Dec 1884 Qtr.
Mabel Hood, Birth [possible, one in the District of Pontefract, June 1886 Qtr.]
Martha Hood, aged 24, DEATH in the District of Pontefract, Mar 1887 Qtr.
Free BMD links Hood to Richardson again (not got any of these Certificates, nor checked the actual Indexes)
Charles Hood = Hannah Richardson, MARRIAGE in the District of Pontefract, Dec 1887 Qtr.
Re John Hood's widow Sarah Hood of Selby, apparently she liked to think of herself as Gentry.
There is something that backs this up, she subscribed a £5 payment to a book about Selby and rather than say about her family origins (my family), it was mentioned she was a Freeholder and in one print run got herself listed under Gentry.
