William and Helen Carson.
« on: Sunday 20 March 16 15:47 GMT (UK) »
William & Helen Carson are in the 1921 Canada census living in Parkdale, Toronto, at 37 Hewitt Avenue.

The original census document indicates they immigrated in 1910.    I have looked at passenger lists for that time but cannot find a match.      Also checked the 1911 census but again could not find a match.

Both were born in Scotland.  William abt 1883 and Helen abt 1888.

I am an 82 year old senior with limited computer and analytical skills and primarily use Family Search and census records.  Budget restraints dictate against membership in Ancestry, FindMyPast etc.,

Any guidance in tracing William & Helen Carson would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

More questions than answers.....

Do you have parents' names for William and Helen?

Were they married in Scotland? It seems odd that they might have married in Scotland prior to emigrating in 1910 and only have possibly a first child born in 1920. Not impossible, of course, but just seems odd.

Dates of immigration sometimes need to be taken with a grain of salt. The date given may sometimes depend on the way the question is interpreted by the householder. They may have put down the date they arrived at their present address. That being said, I can't find them on a passenger list at the moment, in 1910 or other years.

Anyway, knowing the parents's names, etc. may help.

I can't see a marriage on Scotlands People that would fit with the couple

Could this be their marriage in 1914 at Toronto on Family Search?  The ages tie in reasonably, it lists both their orgins as Glasgow and lists their parents

If they did marry in Canada they could have emigrated seperately

Thanks so much kind people.

Polar Bear I think Kay 99 has come up with a solution.   The name McTaggart kind of seals it for me as William and Helen's son, Graham, was rumoured to have the middle name McTaggart.  As I understand it, it was not uncommon for children to be given the mother's maiden name as a middle name.

This is so much more than I expected and very much appreciated.

So it would seem William Carson and Helen McTaggart immigrated separately.  An excellent lead.

Kindest regards.

Glad it was of use.  This looks like William and family in 1891 living at 2 Langside Terr, Cathcart,Renfrewshire with brother John's middle name looking like a mistranscibed McTaggart

James Carson    32  Travellor b Dumbarton
Maggie Carson    29 b Dumbarton
William John Carson    9 b Glasgow
John McLaggart Carson 6 b Glasgow
Maggie Logan Carson    4 b Langside, Renfrew

Still can't see the immigration!!

Hi Kay,  I am so appreciative of this.     In an earlier reply I mis-spoke.  Should have said immigration for Helen Johnston. (Not McTaggart).

I am presently on a fairly heavy meds regimen so it will take a little longer for me than most to absorb and process this data into my Family Tree Maker.  Beats crosswords.

If it helps I think Helen's sister came over and this is her marriage.   I wonder if the whole family came??

I can't see the immigrations at the moment but with the siblings I think this might be Helen -listed as Ellen- and family in 1901 living at 6 Binnie Pl, Glasgow including siblings Jeannie and John.   There is a boarder with the surname Mcinally which could possibly be Elizabeth's siste??   Children are all born Glasgow

John Johnston    44  Spirit Salesman  Ayr, Ayrshire
Elizabeth Johnston 39  Glasgow, Lanarkshire
John Johnston    20
Ellen Johnston    17
Margaret Johnston 13
Mary Johnston    13
Elizabeth Johnston 11
Jeanie Johnston    9
Arthur Johnston    7
Alexander Johnston 5
Agnes Johnston    3
Mary McInnaly    37  Boarder b Glasgow
John Curran 18 lodger

Have to sign off now - check back later - Kay
