Hi Ruskie, did you install FH on your ipad as well as a computer - with one licence?

Edited: have had a look at the FHUG forum, thanks :)

Sorry to correct you but Family Historian itself does not run on either an ipad or any pad running the Android operating system. (Family Historian is a windows only program - there is an App available which will run an FH data file but it is not Family Historian).

What can be done is to save a gedcom file from either FH or any other genealogy program capable of generating one and transferring this to the pad for using in any of of the several Apps available.
There are several methods of transferring a file over depending upon the tablet being used and the App installed.

For example, Gedview on the Ipad can take files via itunes on the host PC, via the web browser (internet explorer, Firefox chrome etc), via email or through an online storage system such as Dropbox.

There are Apps for the major online services which allow you direct access to the data you may have stored there.

Tablets are useful tools for carrying your information with you for easy reference, in addition most have facilities for taking notes and photographs for later reference

Thanks. That's what i read on the FHUG forum - too complicated for me so I'll just leave it on my computer. I still have my tree on ancestry so can use that if needed when out and about.

You can log in to your ancestry tree on an iPad.  I do it all the time, as my PC is in the bedroom and I prefer not to be stuck in there looking at the wall.  Like to be comfortable in the lounge, where I can look out the window at my garden and the hills!

You can also show you tree to other family, working from your iPad, attach the special iPad to TV ADAPTER CORD,  and it will show on your tv screen.

You can actually display anything that is showing on your iPad screen, and not just your tree!

There is however also a free app for ancestry, but I prefer the usual view.

I've been using ancestry on my ipad a lot since buying it last summer; as you say, easier than always being on the computer and great when visiting records centres etc. And i don't like the app either!

Not being able to use FH on my ipad will probably be my biggest gripe about it once i get to grips with the reports as I'm doing now ;D

Mine too ..... unfortunately Calico Pie (the publishers) are quite adamant that for the foreseeable future FH will remain a Windows only program.

The App that I mentioned previously (sadly I can't remember its name) was being pushed for a while in the FHUG. I remember looking at it once but the price difference between it and other Apps was not justifiable for my uses , (my opinion)

I wont bother with any other apps. Luckily in some ways, my Ancestry tree is fairly complete so unless and until more records become available online or i can travel around the UK and break down a few brick walls, my tree isn't going to have loads added to it so i should - hopefully - remember to add anything i do find to FH as well.

I use Gedview on the iPad and also have one called Branches installed as I currently don't use any of the major online firms.

They are good to use in that they don't need an online connection to display the data and Gedview has been improved a number of times since its first release and although far from a full blown program like FH it does pretty decent job.
