Ross Family Middlesbrough
« on: Monday 14 March 16 17:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone

I have William Ross born about 1836 Scotland he would be my 4x Grandfather marrying a Elizabeth Taylor born about 1838  in Middlesbrough.

On a select marriage record for the pair in 1857 Middlesbrough it has Williams father as a James Ross.

What i'm wanting help with is William's mother Catherine i believe she was born around 1800 in Scotland and the only information i have of her is the 1851 census with William and his Siblings and her names changed to Colingwood and states she's married to John Colingwood born abt 1811 living in Middlesbrough. I have been unable to find any such marriage for the pair and nothing about "James Ross".

I haven't been able to find Catherine and kids in 1841 she had Peter 1834 William 1836 and Catherine 1839

I have all the censuses for William apart from the 1841 and 1861 censuses. Any help would be welcome!

If James Ross occ is shown on that 1857 marriage cert and he was a mason then it's the right entry.

I haven't got the marriage cert just what it reads on the select marriage on Ances stating there names and there fathers. But that censuses does look good i wonder if its worth looking into a death for James Ross around that time

If you have access to ancestry did you have a look at a tree for this family ...remembering to double check as some tree's can be a bit misleading ...The census Carole mentioned I would say that is the family you are looking for ...Have you checked this marriage 28/5/1826 Dunfermline Fife James Ross and Catherine Thomson ...Is this the death for Catherine Ross 1876 Stockton ?

Hi Rosie i haven't checked many tree's as the one's i did look at only had the same 1851 census for Catherine as i did and no other information. I think i've found a possible 1871 census for her and she's living in Linthorpe which was classed as a district of Stockton so that death looks like a good possible  for her. I haven't checked that marriage so i will have a look now, i find looking in Scotland a lot harder then other places for some reason. :-\

P.s

Just checked out a few tree's after i played around with giving Catherine the Thomson name and there's a few tree's that popped up they all have the 3 children i have. They don't have anything on my William but do have information on the kids they stem from!

The tree's don't seem to have any censuses and so on attached to them which is making me a bit nervous as to where they got the info from. Some tree's even have the children from the 1841 Scottish census on there tree's but don't show where they where in 1851 when Catherine and the other 3 kids where living with Colingwood?

Yes I would say that looks like Catherine Ross in the 1871 census in Linthorpe occupation dressmaker ...I would suggest getting this death certificate to see what it says worth a try
You might be finding the records in Scotland a bit harder because it's before the statutory records 1855    and a lot of births were not recorded ..You would need to look on www.scotlandspeople.gov at the old parish records ..

I've added them to my tree as possible for the moment, no ones seem's to have anything on my William. I have noticed they have Son Peter as Peter Thomson Ross they do have a marriage for him but he has his father down as Alexander Ross and there is another family with a son of this name with a father as Alexander so i think they have gone down the wrong track for him.

They also have a marriage for the youngest daughter Elizabeth in Middlesbrough but she's not with her mother and brothers in 1851 so it makes me think is this also the correct one? They have got a picture of one of her sons on the tree so i'm hoping they have prof of who she is.

The tree has a exact date of death for Catherine also stating she died in the union workhouse i was thinking of messaging the tree owner but they don't seem to have been online for 3 months.
