Hi

The person in qyestion then became a sailmaker and ships rigger foreman onshore. Would they have learned these trades on board a vessel?

John Prescott is a former UK Deputy Prime Minister and all-round colourful character ;D

See more here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Prescott
Section 9 headed 'Criticisms and controversies' is quite enlightening!
