Hi, could anyone tell me if it was common for a relation to stand in for the mother with that persons name appearing on the cert in a baptism ceremony, due to illness etc. Thanks

Not sure what you mean by 'stand in' for the mother.
I know my mother wasn't at any of her children's baptisms, my aunt brought me up to the church, but you wouldn't know that by looking at the church register.

"Stand in" It means substitute.
