Thanks diddymiller, I have the marriage 17th Nov 1771 Barrow Upon Soar, which gives KILK, very interesting that bos villages site (sorry never come across this site) says possible misspelt, I am sure that is correct.
Thanks for adding the information about William Musson, do have that information, indeed information on the MUSSON line back to the 1650s in Leicestershire.
I did not mean to hijack this thread on Daniel Kirk, so please disregard my query about the KIRKS.
So many thanks for your efforts at Loughborough library. Availability of records for Leicestershire on line are very good, but do seem to be lacking for Loughborough and Leicester for some strange reason.
Many thanks :)
Interested in MUSSON and KNOWLES surnames mainly in Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Lancashire. LAKIN and BURROWS surnames mainly in Staffordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire and Derbyshire. RILEY surname in Leicestershire. FLETCHER surname in Derbyshire. Very interested in the DUDLEY surname.

Going back to my original request regarding information on Daniel Kirk and his son of the same name, has anyone got any ideas where the two of them would have been employed as gardeners in Loughborough?   I have tried delving into Loughborough`s history online but perhaps you locals know more about life in the 19th century.  Were there any large estates, stately homes or rich families who they may have been working for?  Could they have worked in the old Rectory Garden?   I have read that the population in 1801 was about 4,500.

Jane

Loughborough had  a number of large landowners around the town & within what is now Charnwood Borough. The main one in Loughborough itself would be De Lisle of Garendon Hall. This was a large Catholic family who owned (& still do smaller acres) 6857 acres. in fact the estate I now live on was once De Lisle land. There is now also a Catholic school in their name.
Edward Warner purchased Quorn Hall (just up the road) in 1854. His family had been involved in trade & industry in the town since the early 18th century. His son sold the estate in 1920.
There were /are many others around in the close villages - Burton Hall / Swithland Hall/ Prestwold Hall/ Beaumanor Hall.

As Daniel is down as living Ashby Place / Pinfold Gate right in town on baptisms I don't think he would be a gardener at one of the big estates out of town otherwise he would have 'lived in'.

Sorry doesn't exactly answer your question.

I have just found this from the historical newspapers.  Do you know anything about ... Elliott Esq.?
I wonder if this was Daniel Kirk junior.  He was still alive at this time and about 48 years old.

I was not able to paste the whole contents but it was about Carrington Horticultural Society which held their annual Autumn Show in the National School room in Carrington.

British Newspapers 1710-1950

Publication:Nottinghamshire Guardian
Publication date:Thursday 20 October 1853
Article text:"judges, Mr. Daniel Kirk, gardener to — Elliott, Esq., Daybrook, and Mr. John Grundy, Snenton. Robbery in Canal Street. — During the night of Sunday last, three strikes of barley were stolen from premises in Canal Street, the property of Mr. John Thorpe Notintone"

Just Google Daybrook, Nottingham. You can see area on map.  Might be worth putting post on Notts board see if anyone knows of local Elliot family.
