Searching for * McGregor b.1938
« on: Monday 07 March 16 00:33 GMT (UK) »
I am desperately searching for an individual?
Looking for (*) McGregor, she was born on 20th July 1938 usual residence was 38 Seafield Road, Leith, Edinburgh. Her mother was Margaret (Meg/Maggie) maiden name Towler, who returned to Aberdeen after the war without (*). Was she adopted/placed in care? Margaret was married to James McGregor, a rubber planter in Sumatra, in 1935 but it seems according to the birth certificate he was not (*)'s father.
She is my father's sister and he is now 85 years of age & would love to know what happened to her, before it is too late?! We have been trying to locate (*) since 2008 & have no real leads or clues - we believe she must have had her name changed & perhaps knows nothing about her brother.
Is it possible for someone to check the ORIGINAL registration to confirm if it is stamped 'adopted'? Any costs will gladly be reimbursed. Using Scotlands People I have been unable to locate a marriage certificate, however due to financial restrictions on buying hundreds of ££ of credits, I have concentrated this search within Edinburgh.
Please, please if anyone has any information or could help then please contact me. Many thanks

Rootschat isn't for searching for relatives who may possibly be alive.  Have you tried the Salvation Army?  I've heard that they can often locate someone within a few days.

As Lizzie says, RootsChat is meant for finding ancestors, rather than living relatives.

Personal details of any people known or thought to be living will be removed, in accordance with RootsChat policy, to avoid spamming and other abuses. So people here will be able to give you general tips and hints how to proceed, but not any concrete details.

I apologise for breaching the rules and I understand. I was advised to ask if it was possible for a search to be completed, on my behalf, at the Records Office. Unfortunately as I am in England it is not possible for me to visit the Edinburgh Office in person.
I have tried the Salvation Army previously, with no luck and as my father is getting older we are becoming more desperate to locate his sister.
Thank you for your advice & we will not give up yet!

Can you please clarify the year of birth. You have 1935 in the title and 1938 in the body of the message.

You can apply in person over the telephone for a copy of her birth certificate here

http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/registration/how-to-order-an-official-extract-from-the-registers

You can clarify with them before you complete your order whether the birth cert will be annotated to show whether she was adopted or not.

If she was adopted and had her name changed you will need to register with organisations who help to re-unite families divided by adoption.

https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register

or here

http://www.adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk/default.htm

or here

http://www.missing-you.net/categories/adoptions.php

in the hope that she too has registered to find her birth family.

Hope this helps

Dawn

Thank you Dawn  :)
We already have a copy of her birth certificate but there is nothing to indicate she is adopted, hence we are looking for clarification/confirmation - willl they do this over the phone?
We have registered with Birthlink but had no results as she has not registered herself. We have contacted the Adoption Records & Salvation Army but nothing so far.
Going round in circles & posting on every site available but not giving up....yet!

If you have recently purchased a certificate and there is no annotation to show she was adopted, then she wasn't officially adopted out of the family but they will confirm that in a general way not with regards to this specific entry.

Being fostered or put into care is another matter.

You say in your opening post that her mother returned to Scotland after the war. Where was she for the duration of the war?

Have you done all you can to check for an overseas death?
