I have to say that I agree it's a letter L.  (Only because I still write mine like that!)

that's the old pound sign, so it is an L

Hi All,

Thanks for all the input - I think!!

The reason for the question is that Neil in 1881 (Thomas & Mary) and 1901 (James) has the similar children as James in 1891 (Thomas, Mary, Ann & James) and there is no sign of Neil!!

So are these the same people - for you able to check :
RG9/2707 20
1861 is the image I have already posted – Neil [L or J] Foster

I also have him in 1871 again with his parents
RG10/3846 8

There is a marriage in the Sept Quarter 1877 of Niel Foster to Anne Moore – which I thought would be my Neil – now I need the certificate!!

1881 RG11 3655/86 3
Neil Foster - 27 - Tailor - Liverpool
Ann - 26 - Ireland.
Thomas - 2 - Liverpool.
Mary - 1 - Liverpool.

1891 RG12 2944/37 8
James Foster - 38 - Tailor - Liverpool.
Ann - 40 - Ireland.
Thomas - 12 - Liverpool.
Mary - 10 - Liverpool.
Ann - 7 - Liverpool.
James - 4 - Liverpool.

1901 RG13/3841 15
Neil -  45 -  Tailors Presser - Liverpool
Ann - 47 - Ireland.
James - 14 - Printer (paper) - Liverpool.
