John Brown The King's Liverpool Regiment 96752
« on: Wednesday 02 March 16 20:00 GMT (UK) »
John Brown was the first husband of my grandmother Elizabeth Banks and with a lot of invaluable help from Liverpool & South West Genealogy forum I was able to piece together just who he was and where he came from as it got quite complicated, it seems not only was he her husband but his grandmother and her grandfather were brother and sister thereby making them 2nd cousins.

It looks like his WW1 service records didn't survive only the medal card, medal roll and soldier's effects.

They were married in Liverpool in July 1918 both aged 20 years old and by October Elizabeth was a widow as John (Jack) died on 8 Oct 1918.

Name:   John Brown
Birth Place:   Liverpool
Residence:   Liverpool
Death Date:   8 Oct 1918
Death Place:   France and Flanders
Enlistment Place:   Liverpool
Rank:   Private
Regiment:   The King's (Liverpool) Regiment
Battalion:   13th Battalion
Regimental Number:   96752
Type of Casualty:   Killed in action
Theatre of War:   Western European Theatre

He is commemorated on the Vis en Artois memorial to the missing and other than knowing he was a Lewis Gunner and this memorial is to men whose bodies weren't recovered I know little else.

I know there are military historians on this site and would be very grateful for any help given as obviously Jack is not just a step grandfather to me but also my 2nd cousin 2x removed.

You can purchase the battalion war diary here - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7352087

They very rarely mention individual 'other ranks'. But you will get some useful background.

13th KLR were in 9th Brigade, 3rd Division, and it looks as if he was killed on the first day of the Battle of Cambrai (1918)
