Help with location in Scotland?
« on: Wednesday 02 March 16 03:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of "five houses on the Clyde, England" and knows where it is. This is listed on my great grandmother's death certificate as her birth place and as the river Clyde is the only Clyde I know of I thought I would post it here.

Cheers!

This might answer your question,  - added - but I've just realised you're looking in England!

https://books.google.co.nz/books?id=EgJBAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA520&lpg=PA520&dq=Fivehouses+Clyde+Glasgow&source=bl&ots=yQaWyuBFo9&sig=vRwkh45sIHP3a3Wky9K06x5G3Bw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi7o_KQiqHLAhUDmpQKHe-dA0gQ6AEIIjAE#v=onepage&q=Fivehouses%20Clyde%20Glasgow&f=false

But there's also one in East Sussex and one on the Isle of Wight (Wiki)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Houses,_Isle_of_Wight

East Sussex is listed building in Icklesham.

I don't know whereabouts in the world you are, nor any dates or names or place of death  .... so it is difficult to offer suggestions. :)

Does your great grandmother appear in any census? (this should give place of birth, so we at least might be able to check that the country is correct)

If she died elsewhere the informant may not be aware of the geography hence "Clyde England" rather than Scotland. Or .... one of jaybelnz's suggestions might be correct.

Do you have any other documentation or certificates which may indicate her place of birth?

Unless we have some more evidence it is just going to be guesswork.  :-\

Thank you! I'm fairly sure it's Scotland becuasemit does identify Clyde. We have only found her in the 1911 census and she gives her birthplace as somewhere completely different, in Durham :-(

Can you tell us a little more about her - name, roughly when she was born, when and whom she married, where she died?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Depending on her date of birth, she may appear in earlier censuses, and the more censuses you have her on, the more accurate (or not) we can judge her place or birth to be.

Information on death certificates is generally the least reliable, so I would not necessarily believe that Clyde place of birth, unless you have some supporting evidence. The information is given by an informant who may or may not be a relative, and may know little about the deceased. I would believe the 1911 census before I would believe a death certificate. Jaybelnz has identifed other "Five Houses" in England  .....  :-\

Do you have some reason to believe she was Scottish?

As Forfarian says, if you can supply more details we might be able to help ....
