Carolli,

I've never actually done it but I think you may need to refresh rather than reset, this should preserve all your apps and data. There is a guide here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

I would definitely copy all data files to a backup drive, just for safety, even if you don't refresh or reset. And, yes, you can drag and drop files from your internal hard drive to an external one. Make sure to "eject" the external drive before you disconnect it. Just pulling the USB plug can sometimes cause corrupted files, if they were not properly closed first.

Often if you have a lot of failed updates it works to tick a few to download, let them and then restart, then download some more etc. If you do a reset, you will have loads! That is because Windows has to update from the reset point, and get up to date. I would try this method before I do a reset.

I have not yet had the W10 upgrade which apparently should have come my way as I'm on W8.1 However my son had a look at my laptop and said there are a load of upgrades which have failed, and advised me to do a factory reset. Will I have to copy my programs to an external hard drive? Will my files be ok ? Can I perform 'drop and drag' to achieve this?

(Contemplating the purchase of a 'W10 ready' laptop when I can afford it)

Any advice would be appreciated.

It should tell you what updates are available to download!

Before the upgrade for Windows 10, your pc needs to be ready. Therefore try and do any failed updates first, then I think you will find the files for Windows 10 will download. The upgrade itself takes a long time, with the screen going blank and restarting several times. It will then update the new Windows 10 to the current version.
I have upgraded four pc's in the family now to Windows 10, and patience is needed - it is a very big update.
Also if you do not have unlimited broadband be sure that 3GB won't take you over your monthly limits.

I didn't reserve Win10 and yesterday I got a box up to the effect that files were being prepared for Win10...I closed it and went out...when I came back I noticed that my computer was running very slow...this morning I left my computer for a while and when I returned it was upgrading...It only took about an hour and a half so I think the files had been prepared some time yesterday whilst I was out.
I'm not happy that It upgraded without without me reserving it but hey ho...it's done now and I will find my way around the new set up. The good thing is that I know where to come if I encounter any problems....hoping that all my software is compatible.
