Hi Catherine
Looking for the marriage of SAMUEL SANDERS (born England 1893)who was living in Dublin 1911 - 1914 and 1923 - 1930s. Samuel was living in England in 1936. I don't know who he married or if he had any children. I know he was the steward of the New Era Club, Great Denmark St., Dublin until 1929. He was the proprietor of Bolton Cycle and Radio Stores, 35 Bolton St., Dublin in the 1930s. Any information, no matter how small would be gratefully appreciated.
Thankyou
Keziah

Hi Catherine,

I'm looking for the baptism for a Richard Levey/Levi from Dublin.  Richard was born c1838 and was in England in time for the 1871 census.  His occupation was Violinist.  He seems to travel around quite alot so I think he is a performer rather than a teacher, thanks, Ruth

Hi Catherine,

I am looking for any info at all on my GG Grandfather, Patrick Bloomfield. He was born in Dublin in 1841 and married Mary Short (b:1846) marriage date not known.
They had a son Joseph, born 1871 at 617, south city No1, Dublin.
The family moved over to Derbyshire,England some time after the birth of Joseph in 1871 and 1874 when their daughter Mary was born.

Any help very much appreciated.
Regards
Gregg

Hi Catherine
I  am new to the board and would like to accept your offer of a search. Location Dublin City . My husbands family (Smyth) his Gt Grandfather Marcus William Smyth married Frances Eleanor Jackson in the parish of St. Thomas 14.06.1858 their were both full age. He lived at the time at 4 Caroline Row and she at 60 Upper Sackville St. His father was a Gentleman(meaning?) and her father was a Merchant.  But we have come to a full stop apart from  knowing their father names John Smyth and Robert Jackson and we know a John Smith(Smyth) lived in 4 Caroline Row which was rented even with this information we have been unable to trace the family any further. It has been said that they end up in Bray around 1865/1879. The family end up in Liverpool in 1901 but by then Marcus William had passed away. Can you help us to take the Irish origin further back any suggestions would be most welcome as our short visits over to Dublin have been in vain.

Thanks
Mary Ellen

Hello Mary Ellen,

I regret I am unable at this minute to assist with your Smyths of Dublin. I know quite a number of people with that surname in various parts of Ireland. I believe
I am related to a family of that name as a daughter of a cousin of my mother (maiden name Alexander) married a Smyth. I am not sure of the precise terminology of the relationship. However it is not all bad news. I am able to answer your little query about the meaning of "Gentleman."

A Gentleman was a man of good education, well reared, who had private means. The title Esq was usually placed after his name. Lesser mortals were addressed (a) as Mr (Mister) and (b) by their surname only. The term Esq meant something in the 1800s and early part of the 1900s. Then we had two World Wars and everyone apart from the aristocracy, landed gentry and Royalty became more of less equal so the term Esq is used much more liberally in this day and age.

Best Wishes, Christopher

Hello Mary Ellen,

I have done a further bit of research for you. I looked at the Dublin Directory of 1850 and discovered a Francis Jackson was living at 60, Upper Sackville Street. I would assume he was the grandfather of Frances (a girl bearing a similar name to him. Maybe the family were expecting a son and switched the "i" for an "e" when a baby daughter arrived instead of the anticipated son who would have been named after Robert's father).  http://www.loughman.dna.ie/dublin1850/xdubdir43.html#Jackson

All the Best, Christopher

Hi Chrishtopher,
My Jackson's did live at 60 Upper Sackville St. so Francis Jackson must be Frances's Grandfather as Robert Jackson was her father.
Also her and Marcus W Smyth were married at St Thomas's Church (United Church of England and Ireland) on the 14th June 1858.
Thank for your time in confirming the address of the Jackson's.

Good Afternoon Mary Ellen,

I hope you do not mind my posting bits of information as thoughts occur to me.
I used to work with a circus. No, I was neither a clown nor a juggler but  I am attempting to multitask by juggling with incoming and outgoing messages at the moment.

Did you notice on the site I mentioned the names of Jackson and Bryce (grocers and wine merchants), Jackson and Sidney (offices),  and Jackson and Co (grocers). You referred to Robert Jackson, the father of Frances, being a Merchant. I am wondering whether Robert was involved with these businesses. Would you mind having a close look at the Christian names of members of the family from the present day back to the time of the marriage of Marcus and Frances? Look for any second given names that look like a surname. You may find nothing but I would be interested to know if a Bryce or a Sidney appear.

All the Best, Christopher
