Edward Mossman - Master Mariner
« on: Saturday 20 February 16 21:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi, on the death certificate of Ellen Feeney in 1926 Gorbals Glasgow, her parents are listed as Edward Mossman - Master mariner deceased and Ann Mossman (ms McKay).
She has also been married to David Begg in Wick, Caithness in 1859 when her parents are listed as Daniel Hume fisherman (deceased)and Ann Hume (ms McKay)
Her 2nd Marriage is to Patrick Feeney in 1880 Glasgow where she is listed as Ellen Hume Mossman and her parents are given as Edward Rawlings Mossman (shipmaster deceased) and Ann Mossman (ms Mckay).
I have had no luck finding this Edward Mossman and wondered if there is any way of finding him through naval records (master mariner/shipmaster).
Any suggestions welcome as this has been a brick wall for some time now
thanks for reading
Eddie

I have to admit I was confused reading your post for the first time.
So Ellen's parents were Daniel Hume and Ann (nee McKay)? And Edward Mossman is then her step-father?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Its still confusing me also, it is unclear whether Daniel Hume or Edward Mossman is her father, both are deceased by the time of her weddings.  I am also not sure if Ann McKay actually married Edward Mossman or not.  Ellen appears on various census as Ellen, Helen, Helena and the Hume Mossman middle names are passed down the family in the next generation.  I wondered if perhaps Mr Mossman had a woman in every port ??

I understand you are asking about master mariner records in your original post, but I think you need to go back and sort out who was who first.
Have you traced the family in census records?

Re-reading your original post, does it say on Ellen's death certificate that she was formerly Begg? Or does she marry Patrick Feeney as Ellen Begg?

I had a quick look at the census records. She is quite tricky to follow, name, age, and birthplace seem to vary a bit.
