Why can I only find a baptism record?

Are the family listed as Allwood in 1901 with son Frederick b 1899 Derby??

From the "mis-spelling" I'm thinking that the parents didn't pronounce the name as I would, e.g.
"So-fee-a", but pronounced their baby's name as "So-fire-a", which is how my grandmother pronounced her name.  Her father, born 1853, was of German origin and I'm presuming that's how it was said over there at the time.

German pronunciation is very regular and predictable. Sophia would be pronounced as you do - "So-fee-a". To get "So-fire-a" (but without an "r" sound) it would have to be spelt something like Sopheia.

I've only been able to access a transcript of the baptism register, but I do wonder if it could be a mistranscription of Alfred? An "l" (lower case L) that wasn't very high could be mistaken for an "e", and an "fr" with a long "f" going below the line as well as above could easily be read as "p". The initial letter is a bit more of a problem, but given the variety of forms of an upper-case "A", and the possibility of some pen strokes being too faint, I don't think Alfred is too much of a stretch of the imagination.

May Ann had four children registered with the surname Holland from 1899 - 1909. Frederick, Mary Jane, William Henry and Alfred.

Alfred was baptised 5th May 1909 at the same church that is listed for Seped. So my first thought was it has been transcribed wrong as i went to the Record Office to look at the baptism and there wasn't one on microfilm for Seped but there was for Alfred, and they are both on 5th May 1909.

Henry 'Holland' is the father of these four, however I believe his real name was 'Allwood' - the four kids above took Mary Ann's maiden name as she didn't marry Henry until 1918 -  well after the children were born.

I have only very recently come across Sapphire Holland's baptism, I wanted to investigate if she indeed belongs to my family, as her Mother has the same name. I know it might not be, but I wanted to prove that she either is or isn't.

They do indeed record themselves as 'Allwood' on the 1901 census - I know this as Mary Jane was born in 1902 at the same address listed on the 1901 census.... they then revert to calling themselves Mr & Mrs Holland on the 1911 census....

Would be so much easier if they kept the same name!

Re Sophia/Sapphire

My gt grandmother was Sophia - my mother told me she was So- fiya not So- feeya which I think is more modern.
My mum's friend was always referred to as 'Aunty Fi' - (as 'fie') . Her name too was Sophia.
