Lookup request. Hunslet leeds
« on: Thursday 18 February 16 16:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone please help with a brick wall..

I am trying to find the parents of my wife's grandad..

His name is Charles Murray born 1920 in hunslet in Leeds

His mothers maiden name is Tate

He married Annie ratcliffe in Leeds in 1942

I am thinking parish records may help, but I can't find any online

So any help or ideas much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Jason

If you don't know his fathers first name I suggest you obtain a copy of the marriage certificate which should give the full name and occupation of both the fathers. The information needed to obtain this is the wedding was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1942 in Leeds, Vol 9B, page 726.
This will cost £9.25 from the GRO.
Is there any chance that his parents could have married in Madras, India?.

I can't see an obvious marriage for Murray/Tate on FreeBMD in Yorkshire

I think as suggested the only way to be sure is either obtaining his marriage cert. that should give you his father's name or obtaining his 1920 birth certificate which would give you both parents names

Is there any chance that his parents could have married in Madras, India?.

Re: the above question I wonder if this is the marriage that johndwadsworth refers too

Id go straight for birth cert and get both parent names.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Thanks everyone for the help

I will go for the birth certificate.  As for the marriage in India, I have no idea.

I suppose it's possible

Just to add another twist

I was told by a living relative. That the Tate is a relation of sir Henry Tate (of Tate and lyle)

And that they were shunned by the Tate family because somewhere one of them married into a travelling circus.

Don't don't how true that is but this is why I am looking.

Thanks again

Jason
