After seeing a thread on postems on FreeBMD, i started to look at some which were connected to the names I'm researching and found one attached to the death of a James Pottage who died in Leeds in Q4 1881 age 70. The postem mentioned his wife was Mary who died in 1878 and that he had two daughters Isabella (married to John Barker ) and Elizabeth.
I found him on 1871 and 1881 censuses, he was born in Kilham Yorks and his wife was born in Hull (hence posting on ERY board). Earlier censuses have other children apart from Isabella and Elizabeth. James is a shoemaker / cordwainer.
I think he may have married Mary Jackson, FindMyPast has a Banns record for James Pottage of Sutton and Mary Jackson of Sculcoates 3 Feb 1833, but I can't find a marriage record.
I've found a baptism in Kilham for a James Pottage s/o Thomas and Elizabeth on 24 Apr 1811 (born 21 Apr 1811). Thomas is a cordwainer. I think this is more certain to be right record. The same couple have a Joanna (1808) and an Ann (1813). So unless there were earlier children baptised elsewhere, a likely marriage date would be 1806/7.
The only fit I can find is a Thomas Pottage who married Elizabeth Cross in Market Weighton on 23 June 1806. It was by licence and his age was stated as 29, so a birth year around 1777.
The only one in 1777 or close is a baptism in York to Samuel Pottage and Jane. I have Pottages in my tree who moved to Leeds, Hull, Market Weighton and York, but none so far link to James, Thomas or Samuel.
Can anyone please get back any further and place this line in Wheldrake, Riccal or Hemingborough which is where my lot originated from.
