Horsmonden Marriage - Avard
« on: Monday 15 February 16 17:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi.  Can anyone help please.  I have found on FindMyPast the marriage of Thomas Avard & Mary Hobbs 2 September 1789.  I wondered if anyone could look up the original Parish Record to see if it gives the parents names of Thomas Avard.  I cannot find his birth or death either.  Thanks in anticipation.

Unfortunately - marriage entries for that period contain very little really useful info which may help to advance your research.  This is a rough guide to what you can expect.

Fathers names were not shown on marriage entries prior to 1.7.1837 which is the date when Civil Registration was introduced.  Mothers names are never shown on English marriage certs

Occupations were not shown

All you will get will be on the lines of the following - some of which you may already know

Names, date and venue

Spinster/bachelor - or widow/widower
Age = Full (over 21yrs) or Minor (under 21yrs)
Of this parish (OTP) - does not necessarily mean they were both born in that parish - just that they satisfied the short residential qualifying time required to enable them to marry there (approx 3wks)

The name and signature of the person marrying them plus the signatures of the 2 witnesses (occasionally more than 2 witnesses but not usual)

Thank you for your comments.
I have hit a brick wall with Thomas Avard.  I cannot trace a birth or death for him.  There appear to be too many Thomas Avards around the area at the same time.
Any ideas from anyone would be gratefully received.

This site has his parents as Edmund and Ann AVARDS nee MORRIS

https://www.myheritage.com/names/thomas_avard

but I should be wary as Thomas and Mary's marriage is listed as taking place in Kentucky not Kent (perhaps the site just assumed Kent was an abbreviation for Kentucky)

Thanks Bearkat, I'll take a look at that sight again.  I have been on it before but didn't notice this thread.  Many thanks
