Neither of the buildings in the above pictures is the one mentioned as 'Cowpen House' in the newspaper article. I think it probably got called 'Cowpen House' because it stood at the end of what was once Cowpen Row, and with the original older buildings long gone, perhaps it was someone's wishful thinking to call such a large building by that name.

And this is Bebside Hall at, you've guessed it, Bebside, which is at an entirely different location altogether, and on the other side of the tracks! In fact, it is really Bebside North Farm at the junction with the Bebside and Horton Road. Sadly the old Farm House / Hall is long gone and new development occupies the site! The perimeter wall is still there and recognisable though.

I put word out to my local friends at Blyth, and the large building we are talking about did get to be named Cowpen House Nursing Home, but after the original Cowpen House was long gone.

Just the extra 2p added to everyone else's comments.

HI,
This is Cowpen Grove or Grove House, It stood where the Miners cottages are, in the "dip" across from the Newsagent. I know this because two of my Aunts had rooms there after they were married. I used to go there to play with my cousins. This was in the fifties. My aunts lived upstairs across the landing from each other. As a child I thought it was "spooky". The front door knob seemed huge to my small hand, the door really did creak when it opened. The hall was dark with one dim light not reaching very far. Dr. Leopold Fothergill and his family used to live there before it was sold and then the rooms let.

The Watts family from Newbiggin  lived for years in Cowpen house they were ship builders in Blyth
there is also a house in Newbiggin called Cowpen house
