Deciphering names/details of parents on birth cert
« on: Friday 12 February 16 16:27 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I need some assistance in deciphering some details on my great great grandfather's birth certificate Robert McGhee.  I am trying to locate the marriage certificate for his parents.  Those details as I read them on this document are as follows:

James McGhee - Father - Coal Miner
Isabella McGhee - Mother - (maiden name Grimson??)
Married 12th November 1854? (this date seems very early considering the birth certificate is dated 1875) in Dalserf, Cambusnethan.

I have exhausted many avenues searching with broader spans and omission of names trying to find James and Isabella's marriage certificate.  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I agree the year of marriage of James and Isabella is 1857 not 1854 - if so it should be locatable on SP.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

I agree with 1857.  Which bits can't you decipher?

I also thought perhaps it was 1857 or 1859 but with no luck.  I can't decipher that date but looked under the alternatives mentioned and a wide span (both parish and other records on SP).
I also can't decipher her maiden name - Grimson??
I found no options looking under Cambusnethan/Shotts/Dalserf or generally Lanark.  I expanded the search to a wider time span and all districts and found only two options, one is dated an Isabella McDonald in 1874 and to an Isabella Winning in 1873.
I also tried under a few variants of McGhee.
Perhaps I should try the census route?  I have the 1901 census record so far.

Grimson looks pretty clear to me.

Certainly looks like Grimson

Are there any baptisms of older siblings that might shed more light on the marriage?

And yes, I'd definitely be going back through the censuses.

Thank you, looking for other siblings birth certs is a great idea.  Their marriage being in the 1850s just seems a bit odd.
