Zena: I wonder if the action of you ending a running process by pressing 'end/break tab' is stopping a background event happening?
[By the way I am not an expert on windows 7/8 and subsequent 10]
More used to the now redundant windows XP.

Thank you Brian & C W
Have just checked for any updates which I do most days, all ok
Will it do any harm pressing the end/break tab to get the opening page up.
Brian No I am not offended  by explaining I am just grateful for you help.
         Thank you both

You could just try to do a Reset...
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.

Hi Zena

Have you had the laptop long, did you upgrade or did it come with Windows 10?
I have an HP laptop, and have had something similar.
When the laptop screen goes blank (then it goes to sleep)  it fails to awake. I 'googled' the problem and there seem others reporting it with HP laptops.
I think the problem maybe a 'driver' may need to be updated. It's not easy to explain, but you  may find details on your PC makers website. Is your laptop HP or another make?

Have you tried leaving it on to see if it sorts itself out? Windows 10 is better at that than the earlier versions. Obviously plugged in to the mains to keep the battery charged.

If your laptop is by any chance an HP model, this link will give you some tips and solutions.
If your machine is another make type  (name of maker) laptop does not wake from sleep mode in Google.

One tip some people have said is to set the pc sleep option to 'never sleep', as a short term fix, till you can find someone to help you.

I would use a reset as very much a last resort :o

You might want to check this website before you try it:

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4130-reset-windows-10-a.html

To quote:

Here's what will happen:

All your personal files and apps will be removed.
All user accounts will be removed.
Your PC settings will be changed back to their defaults.

Even if you choose to keep your personal files, installed apps will be removed and settings changed back to factory settings.

I agree with Mike.
If you do a reset,  the laptop will still have to do a lot of updates to get up to date!
It's not unheard of for a certain update to cause problems, and a new one will be released to fix it. Also you may find that if a driver needs updates, one will be released and it will fix itself.
If however you do a reset as last resort, be sure to set SLEEP option to NEVER. That will ensure it does it without interpretation.
Good Luck, hope you don't need to do anything!

Hi C W & Mike
Thank you for your further advise. Still working fine. Last night I checked for updates but was all ok then I went to  system setting and clicked on Network it seemed to be doing a scan. Since then all is well. I will not be using reset now you have advised me. I wouldn't like to lose the work I have.

Thank you again for you time and effort in helping me
