I can only find ONE William Eke born in Corpusty,Norfolk - and he was born 1872 - not 1880
can I ask where you got the info he was born 1880 ???....the 1872 William Eke born Corpusty had parents named William and Caroline and in the 1881 census they are living in Wood Dalling,Norfolk

Thank you -
Thorough research has already been carried out but thought I'd post on Roots Chat just in case something might come up or occur to somebody - just a long shot...

Merchant navy lists: there's nothing for the period, they stopped registering merchant sailors from about 1850 till 19 something.

Crew lists were destroyed except for years ending in "5" so 1895 & 1905 and these aren't online, and are indexed by the name of the ship, not the crew.

Relative of William Eke looking for the information lives in Australia - knows about admin/arrangement of records etc. All Australian State 'on-line' records have been checked for the relevant time period - visits to other states to physically search records planned.

Thank you 'garstonite' - but the 1872 William Eke is not our man - details of 1880 birth received from William's grandson.

OK Carol - no wonder I was confused
I have found him in the 1891 census - Hannah  married a man named Thomas Watling ...the family - if I am right are in Red Lion Street in Aylsham,Norfolk
can you confirm this is the family please ??  William is 11 and Hannah has married - so he was younger than 12 when his dad died ??

it looks like William Eke father died when he was 5-6 ...Thomas Watling to Hannah Eke dec qtr 1886 at Aylsham,Norfolk

Hannah was a single woman when she married - you can see the marriage cert record here
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VNJM-GLL

Hannah Eke father was a Sheperd named Peter Eke - so there is an extra ancestor for you ..HANNAH WAS 47 when she married in 1886 - so born around 1840 ...I will try and find her baptism

do you think if William was a young lad and needed his Fathers signature for him to go to sea he may have signed up as William Watling ???....just a thought to consider ?
