Harry Burman Morrall 1869 - 1953(?) Art Teacher at Hull
« on: Wednesday 03 February 16 20:12 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information on Harry Morrall. He went to the York School of Science and Art where he is listed on the Pass list for examination in 1894 at St Leonard's Place School. In 1898 he is listed as receiving his Art Master's Certificate and it looks like he taught at The Kensington Government School of Science and Art in Bristol in the early 1900's, before moving back to York - the 1911 Census shows him living with his three sisters in Bootham Terrace. I believe he later became second master at the Hull School of Art. Anything that can fill in the gaps would be appreciated.

Have you looked for a marriage for him on freebmd?  I can't see anything obvious so perhaps he never married

www.freebmd.org.uk

No probate entry for him https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

Have you contacted the Education Dept - can they offer any info?

What is your interest in him?

It seems Harry and his siblings were baptised as adults in Bishopthorpe on 14 December 1894.  Harry's date of birth is given as 29 June 1869, son of William Baldwin Morrall and Emma of St Helen's, York.  William was a telegraph inspector.

Just to clarify Barnoldswick's request a bit more.  This info is from a pm he sent me

His great grandfathers second wife was tutored by Harry Morrall and he has a drawing of her which he thinks may have been done by Morrall.  I have pm'd him asking for clarification as to whether it is signed by Morrall.

He would like to track down some of Morrall's signed work for comparison to help confirm it.  He also feels that knowing more of Harry Morrall's life may also help put some perspective on his step great grandmother's life during the interwar period.

I have suggested he contact the School of Art (if it still exists) or the Education Dept as they may have some of Morrall's work in their archives or know a bit more about him.

I have also suggested that a copy of his will may possibly mention a bequest re: artwork etc - longshot I know

Alternatively - perhaps an art dealer/expert could offer an opinion but it would depend just how well known Morralls work was and whether it is a signed piece

Update

The drawing does not have a full signature - only initials HBM

The Hull School of Art have been contacted but nothing has turned up yet although their librarian is still looking.

A copy of the will is being considered

In the Hull Daily Mail 16 May 1934, an article on the retirement of HBM says

"His personal art productions have been mainly in the realms of portraiture, one of the most successful being a portrait in oils of the late Duke of Beaufort."

Western Daily Press 11 Dec 1907 there is a report on the AGM of the Bristol Conservative Working Men's Association

"They thanked their President, his Grace the Duke of Beaufort, for the assistance he had given them from time to time, and at their annual dinner.  The Association having asked his Grace to sit for his portrait, he kindly consented to do so.  His time however did not permit of more than a few hours being obtained and after waiting many months for a promised sitting, to get certain alterations, the artist Mr H Burman-Morrall, was obliged to leave for an appointment in Sheffield, where he did his best to finish it, and it was now placed finally before the Association for acceptance to hang in the headquarters of the Association."
