Margaret Mercer - Prescot 15-Aug-1890 - 10-Jun-1921
« on: Tuesday 02 February 16 21:25 GMT (UK) »
This is a real long shot but I am still desperate to have a photograph of this lady. I have contacted relatives with no success on my mission, but I refuse to give up. There must be one somewhere. Margaret married John William Griffiths on 31st January 1914 at St Mary the Virgin Church, Prescot. She was living at 38 Queens Rd, Prescot at the time of her death and prior to that 12 Ward Street. The daughter of James Mercer and Mary Emma Rogers. The biggest event would have course have been the wedding. This lady was my grandmother and I really would love to be able to see what she looked like. She died when my father was 5 months old. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure that "there must be one somewhere".  Photographs were very much a luxury. There must be hundreds of people from that era for whom there never was any photo. But, assuming there was, then the most likely people to have it would be family, and you say you have already contacted rellies. I am not sure who else would be holding a photo, and know who it was of!  But I hope I am wrong and you find what you are looking for.

Thank you. I believe in the power of positive thinking and if you want something enough you will get it. Like trying to sell something, it only takes just one person to want that item. For me someone may just have one and I believe they do, they just don't know yet that I would like a copy. :)

I've looked through my records and can't find anything. I was also hopeful that I might have a copy of her entry in the burial registers, but mine only go up to March 1921

I did however find a burial record for John Griffiths, who was 7 days old when he died in March 1916 and was buried at St Mary's. His mother's maiden name was Mercer, so I assume he was a brother of your grandmother

My grandparents were married in 1917- he was an engineer and she a nurse so there was money for a formal photograph and he was a keen photographer so someone could have easily taken photos on the day. However, no pictures were taken according to grandmother. The closest I have is a later snapshot taken outside of her wearing wedding dress (grey chiffon, not the long white sort with veil) standing next to father-in-law. I never got to see the dress as it was later ruined by a stray firework so after the ceremony it was much worn as her 'good' dress.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you Stephen Nulty for your efforts, very kind of you indeed. Young John Griffiths is actually my fathers brother. My father became an only child. I look like my mother and we (I have 5 brothers and sisters) are so keen to see a picture of Grandma for many reasons.

Thank you also aghadowey for your insight into times when my grandparents would have married. My grandfather was a successful business man and owned his own home so I would like to think (albeit hopeful) that they did have someone taking pictures. Thak you both for your replies, much appreciated. Jane
