Thanks one and all for your input, it has filled in some gaps, I have discovered that the original record is at National Archives UK and intend to pay a visit soon... not that far away. It seems fro what I can decipher, that if you joined the RNR in those days and became unemployed, seemingly you were not allowed on a training course.
Narrow minded people back then

Hello Peter
If visiting TNA, Kew, you will need their 'Readers Ticket', take your Passport or Driving Licence ID to prove officially your photo to your name, if you need one.
Plus two recent forms of printed ID with both your name and address on together. Official items posted to you, such as bank statements, tax notifications, C/Tax, Utility Bills (gas, water, electric), which have been posted to your address AND with your full name on, which matches your official photo ID., to get a 'Readers Ticket' to view original records. You will be given everything back straight away, once they have looked at them.
If in doubt telephone in advance, they are very pleasant and helpful people, but you must obey all the rules!
Bit surprised 1937 military stuff is at TNA, is it open or closed, best telephone them before going. An RAF personnel record would still be with MoD, or their archive, under their control.
