Need help with Agnes!
« on: Monday 25 January 16 17:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello there!

I'm struggling with my 2nd great grandfather and his wife.  I received my great-grandfather's death certificate from the records office which confirmed his birthdate for me - and with that (and his marriage record) I've managed to find his family on the 1901 and 1911 census' which list his dad as Robert and his mother as an Agnes..

so I've been looking for a marriage record between a Robert Craig and an Agnes, but I've spent quite a bit searching the online records office, and can't find a marriage between a Robert Craig and an Agnes in the time frame I think it probably happened (their oldest child was born 1893, so I've been looking around that time period)

Perhaps I've just missed it in my clicking, or perhaps I'm searching incorrectly?  Any suggestions to what I should do at this point?  If I paid for a birth certificate would that hold his mother's maiden name?

Agnes is interchangeable with other names such as Nancy, Anne, Ann and sometimes even Hannah...

Do you know Agnes' maiden name?

Can you post the links to the census records as that may help find more details for you.

Her maiden name is sadly what I'm looking for!  Here are the census links:

I didn't know the name was interchangable - I'll look for some of those other names.

The 1911 census is interesting since it says Agnes Craig married 29 years (c1882) & 4 children although the 3 listed only range in age from 14 to 18  :-\

Both Robert and Agnes shown as born Co. Down which may mean you need to expand your search area.

What is the name and birthdate of your great-grandfather?

That is curious isn't it?  I wonder where the other child is?  I have expanded my marriage lookup to Down, but unfortunately since I've only been going on Agnes - that hasn't proved useful.  I'll try again with the new info.

My great-grandfather was Robert Craig (there are far too many of these!) he was born February 8, 1895 in Belfast

I just did a search of both Down and Antrim for a Robert Craig married between 1881 and 1883 *according to the 1911 census on length of marriage and came up with no Agnes', nor Anne's or Nancy's.  Just Janes, Margarets, Marys, and a Harriet.  :-\  I'll expand the years of the search, but as I said, with the poor searching at the site, it's costing a fortune to click through them all!

Interesting!  I'll give a look for that name - how did you find her birth?

Just about to post that! Thinking that George would be the easiest child to find there is this birth:
George Craig 1 Nov.1897 Belfast (mother- Herron).

No for a word of warning- birth certificates will list mother's maiden name but a marriage certificate will list present surname so a widow will appear under surname of deceased husband although her father's surname should also be listed on the actual certificate (unless illegitimate).
