Well, I failed miserably. There are obviously big holes in the Ancestry data.

I could find only one offspring from Rowland and Elizabeth in the entire county - Edith 1675. it's hard to believe that they had only one child.

As a test of coverage I searched for 6GG Robert's two marriages, 1716 and 1732 which both appear on forest-of-dean.net; neither exist according to Ancestry. Both marriages took place at Gloucester Cathedral which is not listed as a Gloucestershire parish on Ancestry.

So I can't connect 6GG Robert with suspected 7GG Rowland. It might be that the quote at the start of this topic - "... ancestor of the present clerk ..." shouldn't be taken literally.

If a visit to the Gloucestershire Archives is out of the question, why not look at the PR's and BT's on microfilm through the LDS?

There is an Archivist at the Gloucester Cathedral - who doesn't conduct extensive research, but would advise.

http://www.gloucestercathedral.org.uk

archivist@gloucestercathedral.org.uk

Also you could contact the Forest of Dean Family History and use their: database correct and request form - as sometimes they will forward a copy of entry/entries etc.

There are 12  FREEMAN marriages  at Gloucester Cathedral on their records

and include

11 October 1696 Robertus FREEMAN parish of St Nicholas married Ffransisca cook

19 May 1713  Antoninius FREEMAN of Badgeworth married Elizabeth FIELD (Edith FREEMAN married Thomas FIELD in 1693)  - probably keeping land in the family

etc etc

I 'popped into' our local library today and used Ancestry (as it's free!!)

and had a very quick look at Rowland FREEMAN's Will 1715 wife Elizabeth (says he is the Son of Anthony FREEMAN of Badgeworth - and also mentions his two grand-daughters - Mary and Elizabeth FIELD -

Had a look at the Will of Anthony Freeeman 1670/1 of Badgworth - and run off a copy (cost 20p.)Obviously on the screen at the library the writing can be enhanced - will try and decipher from the photocopy - but does mention Rowland who is his eldest and four younger sons, but doesn't mention their names - but 5 daughter, Mary, Elizabeth Sarah and Robena  and Rachel ?  and brothers George and Isaac GWYNETT also mentions his Mother.

These children could have been christened at Chipping Campden - with Anthony Freeman 1 February 1655.

LDS might help. My nearest FHC is open limited hours, so I can't contact them until Tuesday. I'd be surprised if they have the relevant films on site, so I'll have to order them. Not sure what the lead time is, but after 300 years, it will seem like an instant.

If Rowland's will mentions only FIELD grandchildren, does it suggest that he didn't have any sons? Maybe Edith WAS an only child!

I didn't know about the archivist at the cathedral - I'll cetainly give him/her a try. Everything depends on identifying 6GG Robert's parents.

LDS have PRs for the relevant parishes only for christenings, so I've ordered microfilm BTs for Upton St Leonards, Badgeworth, and Shurdington (on a hunch - it's right next door to Badgeworth); I've emailed the Cathedral archivist; and I'm waiting (im)patiently for a copy of Rowland's will.

Watch this space.

Update on the previous post;

Rowland's will doesn't mention any sons. The BTs have many years missing, including the critical 1685-1686 when  I calculate Robert was born. Added to that, I have had no response from the cathedral archivist.

So, I scored a reverse hat-trick - 3 out of 3 failures.

I don't know where to try next.

If you have access to Ancestry, start looking at Freeman wills from Badgeworth and surrounding parishes; you should be able to build up some sort of family tree from them.
I did the same with my ancestors from Temple Guiting and surrounding areas.
