Rowland FREEMAN died 1715
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 03:57 GMT (UK) »
The little I know of my 7 X great-grandfather Rowland FREEMAN comes mainly from  a passing reference in "Gloucestershire Notes and Queries Volume 3" published in 1887:

"As long ago as August 13, 1693, Thomas Feild and Edith Freeman were married by licence in Matson Church, and there is a fine tomb fast falling to decay, at Upton, which commemorates the death of Edith, wife of Thomas Feild, of Gloucester, gentleman, and daughter of Rowland Freeman, gentleman, who died November 4, 1698, aged 23 years. This Rowland Freeman was an ancestor of the present clerk of Upton, and died in 1715. "

The "Upton" referred to is Upton St Leonards, and the "present clerk" was my 3 x great-grandfather.

I have found a marriage allegation for 1674 for Rowland FREEMAN gentleman of Badgeworth and Elizabeth BINGLE of Upton St Leonards, which looks plausible given Edith's calculated birthdate of 1675, but no more information is recorded, so I don't know where the marriage took place, but I suspect it wasn't Upton St Leonards.

As well as details of the marriage, what I'd really like is christening details for Edith and other children, especially Robert about 1685.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Wow! Thank you Capetown. There's a lot to digest there.

I don't have anything to connect my tree with the Cirencester FREEMANs although the forenames Rowland and Robert are tempting., but the dates are too early. I'll keep them in mind when I get the subject Rowland pinned down.

There is a close family connection with Upton St Leonards from the early 1700s until the early 1900s, so I think the 1674 FREEMAN-BINGLE marriage is correct.

The 1693 FIELD-FREEMAN marriage fits the quote exactly, so that's a valuable find. It gives Edith's residence as Upton; so, given that she was only 18, it suggests that her parents were also living in Upton at that time. Does anyone have access to the Upton PRs? (I'm in Australia).

The 1707 FREEMAN-NIBLETT marriage could be the son of the subject Rowland.

I already knew of the 1758 FREEMAN-STROUD marriage - that's my 5 x great-grandparents.

I have been trying to get a copy of Rowland's will which is listed on the Gloucestershire archives, but the ordering page won't accept the reference number. I've emailed them about it so I'll wait patiently for a reply. With that confirmation, I can pursue the BINGLES/BANGLES.

After a google search, familysearch tells me ancestry has the Upton St Leonards records in their database, "Gloucestershire Baptisms, Marriages and Burials". Not sure how complete their coverage is, but for an Australian like you and me, it's a good starting point.  ;)
Do you have access to Ancestry?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

An alternative is to view the Upton records through the LDS family history centres; I noted that the BT's have earlier coverage than the PR's unusually. The PR' start at 1646, and the BT's start at 1570.

As Rowland FREEMAN (Gentleman) was living in Badgeworth when he married in 1674

On the Forest of Dean Marriage Allegations

http://www.forest-of-dean.net

There are 434 FREEMAN's Marriage Allegations/Marriage Bonds and this one from Badgworth about the same time

3 February 1677

Ferebee FREEMAN aged 20, Bachelor, Gentleman : residence, Badgeworth
Elizabeth BADGER aged 24, Spinster - residence, Westbury
by Licence
event type: Marriage Allegation

--

There is a baptism on the Forest of Dean records : baptism 18 February 1680 at Newent
Elizabeth FREEMAN, father's forename: Ferreby - occupation: Mercer

1 May 1669

Elinor FREEMAN aged 27, Spinster, residence: Badgworth

he signs
Marriage Allegation

* Isaac HAGHE birth on Fod Records at Ashleworth - 16 October 1633  - father Abraham

--

There is also on A2A - mention of Anthony FREEMAN, Gent of Badgeworth and dates are around 1647 (his Will is in Gloucestershire Gene. Database - for 1671)

On Hidden Heritage

http://www.hidden-heritage.co.uk

Gwinett

Marriage Settlement 1646

....  This releated to the marriage of Richard GWINNETT to Anne CAPLE the daughter of William CAPLE who was an Alderman in the city of Gloucester.  Others mentioned were Richard's parents, George & Elizabeth GWINNETT, and Anthony FREEMAN of Badgeworth, who was Richard's brother-in-law

If you belong to Ancestry - there are trees which state

Anthony FREEMAN : parents: Rowland FREEMAN and Mary TEREBY

Anthony FREEMAN married Elizabeth GWINETT in London and they had two sons, Rowland FREEMAN in 1643 and Anthony 1654

----
In previous reply mentioned the National Archives (Google A2A)

The Will of Rowland Freeman of 1747 is available to download for £3.30

I have in the gone through this process in the past - and the Will comes immediately after payment on line.  The advantage being you can zoom in -  which enlarges the writing - photo-copied Wills can be sometimes difficult to read, black around the edges etc etc. and take weeks to arrive.

The National Archives many Wills including 75 Freeman's from Gloucester (inc Rowland Freeman, Mercer of Cirencester 1633)

Also on A2A and searching for Edith Bingley

1658

Leigh v Bingley:
Plantiffs: William Leigh
Defendants: Edith Bingley - Widow
Subject: property in Upton St Leonards, Gloucestershire
Document type: answer only
Held at: The National Archives, Kew

Thanks pinefamily that could be useful. I cancelled my subscription to ancestry because I found their service was oversold - if their records for Upton St Leonards are complete now, they certainly weren't then.

I got most of my information in my tree by searching the parish records at the Gloucester Records Office during a brief visit, but at that time hadn't pushed back this far. If someone can confirm that ancestry has the records, I might rejoin.

Thanks Capetown, you/ve given me lots more to digest. But I still haven't proved I've got the right Rowland yet - I need him to be the father of Robert about 1685. After fighting the website of Gloucestershire Archives, I managed to order a copy of Rowland's 1716 will. I would have much preferred to get it online from A2A than wait a week or more for a photocopy (at twice the price) but didn't get the choice.

If I can join the dots from your snippets. it could push my tree back two more generations. The alternating Anthonys and Rowlands and the similarity of Ferebee and Tereby are tantalising hints.

On Ancestry - (can be viewed free at our Local Library) -
Gloucestershire Wills have been transcribed.

Should Rowland FREEMAN be your correct line, in previous thread, mentioned the marriage of Ferebee FREEMAN (of Badgeworth) aged 20 in 1657 and later baptism of his daughter Elizabeth in Newent in 1680 when Ferebee was listed as a Mercer.

On Google book

A Collection of Tokens issued in the 17th Century from 1650 to 1670 by Trademen in the City etc

FEREBEE George (Coat of Arms, Gloucester) in Cirencester 1666
FEREBY Edmund of Cirencester
FREEMAN Edmund in Cirencester 1655
FREEMAN George in Campden
FREEMAN Rowland, Mercer of Morton in Marsh

and also

Commune, County & Commonwealth - The people of Cirencester up to 1643

'Only a few, or a few hundred metres separated their households of 'better sorte'
Robert GEORGE esquire, John COXWELL esquire, Robert GEORGE gent, Jeffrey BATHE gent
John MORTYMER - gent, Rowland FREEMAN, mercer, William TURBILL, mercer, George FEREBY, mercer.

Fereby is a very uncommon name -

There are a few FERIBYE/FERBY, e.g. George/James Wills listed on Gloucestershire Database for Cirencester
--

Going back to the Public Member's Tree on Ancestry (I don't subscribe any more) - but do wonder if the marriage of Anthony's parents were: Rowland FREEMAN and Mary TEREBY - should that be FEREBY ???

--

Forest of Dean records

Marriage by Licence - 3 February 1638

George FERRIBYE aged 27, Bachelor, mercer, Cirencester
Judith CUSTYS - aged 17, Spinster, Cirencester

---

Men in Armour for Gloucestershire 1608

Cirencester (Dyers Street)
George FEREBY, Mercer, A60 - Tallest Stature.

Dyer Street was then and now a shopping street etc.

Thanks again Capetown.

You prompted me to ring my local library - and, yes, they do have access to Ancestry. They say it's not full access, but couldn't tell me exactly what restrictions there are. So I've scheduled a visit for tomorrow. We'll see how may dots I can connect.

Amongst my collection of disconnected fragments, I found the following in Bigland's Memorial Incriptions for Upton St Leonards:

"In Memory of ROWLAND FREEMAN, of this parish, Gent. who departed this Life, June 4, 1715, Aged 71 years. Also of ELIZABETH, the wife of ANTHONY FREEMAN, of this parish Gent. March 22 1713, Aged 19 years.

In Memory of EDITH, the late wife of THOMAS FIELD, of the City of Gloucester, Gent. and daughter of ROWLAND FREEMAN ,of this parish, who died Nov. 4, 1698, Aged 23 years."

This puts Rowland's birth at about 1644, but where? Upton? Badgeworth? Cirencester?

I take "of this parish" to mean that he'd lived there for some time, but wasn't necessarily born there - he was 30 years old and "of Badgeworth" when he married. I need to check Badgeworth baptisms to connect Rowland to my 6G grandfather Robert whose second marriage, incidentally, was to Joan STOCK "spinster of Badgeworth".

Wish me luck at the library tomorrow.
