Hi Surrey Genie

In a nutshell, my main guy is James Moralee b.13/02/1805 and bapt.02/06/1805 - All Saints Newcastle.

The next record I've got of him is in the 1851 living with his wife and family in Mold, Flintshire, North Wales where the family remained, James died in 1865.  He was my g.g.g grandfather.
Desendents remained in North Wales in and around Mold, the surname, as you can imagine has undergone some spelling alterations!!! and has been Morrlle since c.1880s  Imagine how many times I've heard "shouldn't there be a vowel in there somewhere!!" LOL

With help on this site I've also found out the following........

James' parents were...
Matthew Moralee and Elizabeth Ramsey m. 5th May 1804 at Boldon,Durham.

Known siblings...
Michael - 3rd March 1807
Margaret - 17th July 1809
both christened Longbenton.

?? Matthew's was born c.1774, Lamesley and ?? his father was Henry.
Elizabeth's father was Michael Ramsey.

I've sucessfully traced my Welsh Moralees back to 1851 in North Wales.....but when they left the North East I've no idea....a couple returned to North East in the 1860s and 1870s with mining.

So for now my hunt is up in the North East pre 1851.

Sorry this is such a long ramble!! ;D

Sarah :D

Hi Sarah
Well sadly it doesn't look as if our Moralee's are connected!  And as you are the first person in 2 years that I've come across who is researching Moralee's I am very disappointed!!!!   :'(

My Moralee's started off in Durham (well its not far from Newcastle ....!) with Henry Moralee born 1789 in Stanhope.  He married Elizabeth from Lincolnshire and all their kids and grandchildren was born in or around Boston.   I think, but have no proof, that Henry's parents were William Moralee and Elizabeth Moses who married in Stanhope in 1787.

(Incidentally, one of Henry and Elizabeth's kids was called Matthew - it seems Matthew Moralee was a popular family name).

My Matthew Moralee, born 1825, married into the Dutton family, origins of which before 1841 unknown.

If you would like any further info on the Lincolnshire line of Moralee's, give me a shout.
Best wishes and a Happy New Year
Terri x :)

Hi
My name is Gareth Morrlle from Mynydd Isa (just outside Mold).  There are very few people that i've found that have the same spelling of Morrlle, plenty of Morrell's though.  If you do find anything or i can maybe help in any way, please feel free to contact me

I just hooked into this site and found the posting regarding James Moralee and the Moralees in general.  Jackpot!  I am descended from Michael Moralee, b. 03 Mar 1807 in Longbenton, nr Newcastle, Northumberland.  He is the brother of the James Moralee by Sarah.  Prior to this posting, I only knew there was a brother named James.  I also have as siblings Margaret b. 17 Jul 1809 and Jane b. 1805.  I'm not 100% on Jane since she has the same birth year as James but no month and day attached to it.

I would love to have more information on James and his family:  Sarah, it looks like we are related.  Michael Moralee was my ggg grandfather.

Michael Moralee married twice.  1st to Catherine Butcher b. 1811, married 1828, place unknown.  They had one son, Matthew Madison Moralee b. 28 Feb 1829 in Springfield, Massachusettes, USA.  I don't know when Michael arrived in the US.  Catherine Butcher Moralee died soon after childbirth.  Michael Moralee married 2nd Sarah Beavon b. 11 Jul 1815 in Wales, possibly Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire where at least one sister was born.  Beavon is spelled in many variations, most commonly Bevan.  I'm not sure where they were married but I am assuming in the US:  they were married in 1831.  By 1832 they were in Dubuque, Iowa where they had 6 children:  Thomas 1832-1832, James 1833-1833 (2 months), Margaret Beavan 1835-1906 (My gg grandmother), Elizabeth Ramsay 1836-1876, Martha Ann 1838-1874, and Mary Currie 1840-1896.  The family then moved to sw Wisconsin, a few miles away and had 6 more children:  Catherine 1842-1901, Sarah Jane 1844-1845, William Henry 1846-1864 (died of disease fighting in the Civil War), Thomas Beavan 1848-1906, Emma Jane 1850-1908 and Sarah Ford 1854-1875.

Margaret Beavan Moralee married William Johns (1824 Perranuthnoe, Cornwall to 1904 Alameda, California) in 1854 in Grant County, SW Wisconsin.  They moved to California for the Gold Rush, had 9 children, 4 of which lived to adulthood, all boys.

I have tons of infomation on this side of the Moralee family and would love to get whatever I could from the English and Welsh family.

To add a bit of thought about this Moralee family:  There is a marriage in Lamesley St. Andrew of Matthew Morrowlee and Alice Elliott 28 Dec 1793

Baptism Lamesley St. Andrew:  Ann Moralee 6 July 1794 d/o Matthew and Alice, Kibblesworth

Then  Newcastle All Saints baptisms:

Mary Morrowlee baptised 28 Aug 1796 d/o Matthew and Alice, pitman

Elizabeth Morrowlee born 8 Aug 1799, baptised 3 Nov 1799 3rd daughter of Matthew Morrowlee, pitman, native of Lamesley Durham by his wife Alice daughter of Thomas Elliott, yeoman, native of Lamesley Durham

Henry Morrowlee born 19 Aug 1802, baptised 12 Sept 1802  1st son of Matthew Morrowlee, pitman, native of Lamesley Durham by his wife Alice daughter of Thomas Elliott, labourer of Lamesley Durham

I haven’t found a burial of Alice in All Saints 1802-1804 and I also looked in Lamesley but it looks like Matthew was married twice.  Also with the male named Henry may lead to more certainty about Matthew being the son of Henry

Here is where I think the problem of Jane/James is.  I have a transcript done by Herbert Maxwell Wood and that entry says Jane 1st son of Matthew etc.  The Bishop’s Transcript has James.

From the BT’s:  James Moralee born 13 Feb 1805, baptized 2 June 1805 1st son of Matthew Moralee, pitman, native of Lamesley by his wife Elizabeth daughter of Michael Ramsay, gardener of Boldon Durham

Longbenton St. Bartholomew baptisms:

Michael Moralee born 3 Mar 1807, baptized 26 Apr 1807 3rd son of Matthew Moralee, pitman, native of Lamesley by his wife Elizabeth Ramsay native of Boldon

I don’t know if there is a son #2 somewhere or if the curate is counting Henry as #1 and James as #2.

Margaret Moralee  born 17 July 1809 baptised 13 Aug 1809, 1st daughter of Matthew Moralee, pitman, native of Lamesley by his wife Elizabeth Ramsay native of Boldon

No burials of any Moralee or similar 1798-1812 in Longbenton.
