In my family research I was aware that my Uncle SubLt A K Hopkins died as a result of a flying accident - well that was the official line at the time. My father and aunts never spoke of the event other than to say he died near scapa flow...
My research found that he as an observer flew in Albercores (1941) and left HMS victorious in scapa flow on a navigation exercise. Through research at the national archives I found a diary of the Sqdrn, in it it describes the event as a plane Landed in the sea near Rona, search planes later found oil patches.
No more information is available, other than some days later the pilots body was found some miles away.
