John and William AXFORD, born 1824/1826 respectively
« on: Wednesday 20 January 16 21:27 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

The two brothers, John and William AXFORD, born 1824 and 1826 respectively, arrived in NZ (Auckland) aboard the St George on 03/06/1842 as some of the infamous "Parkhurst Boys"

I have not been able to establish either their parentage or places of birth, only that they were tried in Surrey on 14/09/1839 and sentenced to transportation for 7 years.   The same applies to NZ in that I have not been able to establish what happened to them after 1842    I wonder if someone can help?? ???

My thanks in advance

Tony

Here is some starters:-

AXFORD

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/SimpleSearchResults.do

61 hits on National Archives.

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=q&hs=1&r=1&results=1&t=2&txq=Axford&pbq=&dafdq=&dafmq=&dafyq=&datdq=&datmq=&datyq=&tyq=&o=100&sf=&ssnip=&e=-------100--1----2Wm+Walker--&x=32&y=6

Papers Past hits 1479, and because of the unusual spelling most I expect would be about family members.

Other NZ forum regulars will be able to advise about cemetery records etc. Rather busy myself right now.

Cheers, happy hunting,

Hi Tony,

So far I have found only two items in 'Papers Past' for a John Axford, who may, or may not, be your man........

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=HBH18800929.2.16&srpos=15&e=-------10--11----2john+axford--

The second from the same newspaper dated 8.4.1891.

Nothing found for William Axford.

Nothing found at NZ BDM for either John or William Axford.

www.dia.govt.nz/births-deaths-and-marriages

Nothing found in Archives for John or William Axford.

Maybe they went to Australia?.......

You may have more success searching the Australian newspapers. There are many references to both "John Axford" & "William Axford".

You are familiar with this website about the Parkhurst boys?

http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~tonyf/parkhurstboys/convicts4.html

There are only 11 entries for the Axford name in the 'White Pages' for New Zealand.....

Good Evening Everyone,

Thank you for your postings, I am extremely grateful, especially the baptisms detail which gives that extra "lead" and the lack of BDM index information etc.

My overall impression is that the AXFORD brothers migrated from NZ as soon as legally possible and probably headed for Australia........I shall seek them there next.

For the moment,

Tony

John Axford,

I suggest we have  John Axford in 1881 as the proprietor of the Tokano (Tokaanu) Hotel .

Along with John Cane, John Axford built a 15-20 ton schooner, the ‘Dauntless’ to trade on Lake Taupo.

It appears that John Axford became a successful businessman in the Taupo area.

William Axford

There was successful litigation by W. Axford for £9 -10s against A. Beregerson in 1895 in the Hawkes Bay, not too far from his ‘brother’ in Taupo.

It's possible they stayed in NZ.

I haven't found anything in Births Deaths and Marriages  but did note the hawker mentioned by Minniehaha. Maori registration was patchy.
