Many thanks everybody, especially ShaunJ - the Strand indeed! I knew it was probably somewhere near Charing Cross but couldn't work out exactly where.

I've noticed before, Shaun is razor sharp. About 1960 I think. The car looks like a Hillman Minx. Looks like the stone pillars in front of the station are still there.
Griffiths Llandogo, Mitcheltroy, Mon. and Whitchurch Here (Also Edwards), 18th C., Griffiths FoD 19th Century.

E Whistler disappears from the phone books after 1955 so that seems a likely date for this photo.
