« on: Saturday 16 July 05 15:36 BST (UK) »
Looking for information for a Thomas Ambrose who was b 1823 in County Down.
Parents were William Ambrose and Jane Glass.
Thomas migrated to Wigtownshire Scotland and m Agnes Kennedy in 1847. I can trace Thomas decendents but not his ancestors.

Any help gratefully recieved.

Hello Anne,

What denomination were the Ambrose and Glass families?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hi Christopher
Thanks so much for your reply. We believe that the Ambrose family would be prestpertarian (allthough we have no definite proof) but the descendant son Thomas (b 1823 who came to Scotland and married in 1847) was of the prestpertarian/Protestant faith.

We visited Irelend in 2005 and did a personal trace in Belfast records office and found what we believed to be William Ambrose birth record (again not confirmed) for 1800 in Portaferry.

Whilst in Ireland we stayed in Newtonards and there certainly were families still living there with the surname of Ambrose but we had nothing to link this with our Ambrose.

We hope to visit Ireland again next year and do some more research and hopefully find more information. Any guidance you can offer will be gratefully received.

Thanks again
Anne
