George Derham born approx 1800-1
« on: Wednesday 13 January 16 16:16 GMT (UK) »
George Derham died on 9 February 1869 age 68 years at Stanpit near Christchurch. It seemed there was no will, because administration of the effects was granted to one of his sons in July 1876, a few months after George's wife Sarah died. According to 1851 and 1861 censuses he was born in Christchurch.
As far as I can find, the only Derhams born in Christchurch around the turn of the 19th century were either the children of James Derham and Betty Sibley or of  James's brothers - John Derham (and his wife Mary Thomas) and Peter Derham (and his wife Sarah / Sally Hopkins).

There was another brother Joseph bapt 1765 in Morden before the family migrated to Christchurch, (he must have died pre- 1841), who may have married a Jane, because there is a Jane Derham of suitable age to be his widow with a Betsy Derham in 1841.

I think he is most likely to be James and Betty's child because they have John bapt 16 Apr 1797 and Walter bapt 01 Aug 1802, so a gap in the right place.
John and Mary have no obvious gap at the relevant time.
Peter and Sally didn't marry until 1803

Can anyone find George'e baptism please and confirm parents.

George is mentioned in passing here

Did a DNA test a few weeks ago and have a predicted 4th - 6th cousin match with a direct descendent of George Derham. If George is a child of James Derham and Betty Sibley as I suspect, the match would be my 5th cousin (right in the predicted range) so a bit more evidence to support my theory.

I’m a direct descendant of James Derham & Betty Sibley through their son Walter James. He did have a brother called George, born 29 Nov 1799 and he died 9 Feb 1869.
George was a master mariner.  His brother Walter James was christened on 1 Aug 1802, but I haven’t so far been able to find his exact dob.

for anyone researching Derhams in Mudeford, Morden and immediate area not census, but dates and names of other records basic details for this page. James Derham 50 1883, Edward Derham 1821, Benjamin Derham 1790 mariner, Elanor and Samuel Derham 1763, Edmund and mother Elizabeth 1696 and 1697 john Derham steeple 1758
john Derham, Mary Derham 63, John 45, Elizabeth 18, all the above are very close to Morden others not mentioned are slightly further afield.

What are the sources for these dates / ages? Are the dates, birth years  or death years? Are the ages, the age of the person at death  or on a particular census?

And welcome to Rootschat - 5th cousin!

these are official records for various different reasons from house rental agreements from manor estates
court records for prosecution, witness to assault, inquest to drowning (not census, birth or death.) hospital records.
merely to place and date anyone researching the Derham family  I also have records of other  Derhams who remained in Dorset after 1841

Without knowing the record and context, a list of names and dates / ages is of limited use.
For example "Benjamin Derham 1790 mariner". You don't mention a place or whether 1790 was dob, dod or another life event.

I have previously researched this Benjamin, but so far unable to connect him to my tree. He was baptised at St James Poole on 15 Jun 1768, son of Benjamin Derham and his wife Mary (nee Bushell), who had married at St James, Poole on 28 Feb 1768 (witnesses Thomas Burt and Daniel Harrison). Benjamin jnr married Sarah Frampton on 25 Dec 1788 at St James Poole. They had a son (also Benjamin) baptised on 25 Dec 1789. Benj jnr  was a mate on the vessel "Mary Ann". He drowned on 13 January 1790 in Brownsea Road after falling from that vessel.  The inquest was held the following day (14 Jan 1790) and he was buried at Skinner St Independent Chapel, Poole on 17th January 1790.

Benjamin and Mary had also had another son, Edward, baptised 15 Apr 1770 at St James, Poole.
Possible burial for Benjamin snr on 23 Sep 1774 at St James, Poole.
