Identifying crossed-out name
« on: Wednesday 13 January 16 15:44 GMT (UK) »
This is from my great-great-grandfather's marriage certificate, in 1839. His father's name is crossed through, and no occupation is given. Any ideas what it might be?

The marriage is between George Randall (signs his name Randell) and Rebecca Miller, October 17th 1839, in Ecton, Northamptonshire. George is a minor, Rebecca is of full age. George married again in 1880 and gave his father's name as Richard Randell, deceased. I've not found anything about Richard Randall/Randell, and have suspected that George was illegitimate.

Any help much appreciated :)

Hazzard a guess at "Charles Randal."

Thanks everyone. The surname's definitely Randall (same as the groom's), and my initial instinct was Charles, but the name looks a bit too long... unless the "r" and "s" are very wide.

And of course I'll never know why a name was entered and then crossed out. I know nothing of the groom's parents, except there's a possible christening with mother Ann and no father, and he later gives his father's name as Richard.

It's a mystery!
