Frisken photo set, Berwickshire & Orkney [9]

Unknown person (likely Frisken family member)

An estimate of the date the photograph was taken, and your best guess at the age of the male subject, please.

I understand that he may be literate (book as a prop), and the square corners of the photograph indicate pre-1872?  Is that correct?

I've made a very brief forray into the census records (via OFHS) for Kirkwall in the 1800's.  Daniel McDonald was listed as a Photographer in the 1871 census as aged 28 and a "Photographer".  In 1881 as a "Formerly Photographer"(?!).  And finally last entry I can easily find for 1891, living at no.6 School Place in Kirkwall as a "Photographer" again.  He is listed as being born in Naim, Naimshire.

This may be one of the older children of George and Isabella features in photo [1].

I think you could be right about the boy in photo one as there is about 10 or 12 years difference in the dates and he looks late teens or early 20s and there is a strong resemblance.

Thank you Carol - that's very helpful.  I think you're quite right!

Often, it wood seem difficult to see the would from the trees, when there's a big family tree to survey for candidates to an unknown photo!

Thank you for your kind offer Carol, but I think there's a lot of people queueing up for photo enhancements and I've already consumed quite a bit of time here :-)

My own skills are a bit "rusty" (sorry, couldn't resist the pun - with the rust spots on the photo!) but I'll have a go myself.

And of course I'll let you know when I've placed all these lovely folk who feature in the photo set.  I think I may have quite a few of them already, and can see a pattern.
