Help needed Please
« on: Wednesday 06 January 16 03:17 GMT (UK) »
Good Morning from Australia….

This is rather long winded but I’m hoping that this contained information will assist in my request for help after researching for 20 years and finding little.

Hugh Fraser (aka Frazer & Frazier) married Mary Ferguson (recorded as Fargason) 26 May 1831 in Wednesbury Staffordshire. Mary was the daughter of Phoebe Ferguson and Mary’s father is unknown…when they married Hugh signed his name and Mary made her Mark….
Hugh Died at a young age of 37 years in October 1837 after a tragic accident of being run over by cartwheel whilst working in Madeley Staffordshire... (info obtained from Coroner’s Inquest). Hugh was buried at St. Peters, Maer. Staffordshire on 16 Oct 1837….which means his birth is Circa 1800.

With all of this information that I have gathered over some 25 years I still do not know who his parents were after gathering Primary records (i.e.) Marriage  etc. I do not know if Hugh was Scots or Irish as the name changed over the years with his descendants to “Fraser” as it’s known today.

I would very much appreciate any help or guidance as I do not want to give up and hopefully someone in this group may be able to assist me in my request to find out….Thanking you one an all for your patience.

Sincerely,
Fay Fraser

I found another post here
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=614119.0
where people spent some time helping.
To save people going back to square 1 to search, have you managed to track down any of the suggestions from there?

Dear Goldie,

Yes it was me that posted those messages about 3-maybe 4 years ago...I appreciate your concern regarding people going over old messages... I also want to apologise for taking up so much space with my request, but this has been going on for almost 20 years between my late Cousin and I, just trying to find out who Hugh Fraser's (akas Frazer-Frazier) parents were and where Hugh was born... Is he a Scot or is he Irish....

What has made it extremely difficult all of these years was Hugh's son Alexander Frazer who married Sarah Berry in Manchester... Whilst researching Alexander and checking all the UK Census  it was always stated on the Census that Alexander was born in Salford Manchester, that was until 1851. where it say's he was born in Slymansdale Gloucestshire.... well that threw a spanner in the works... after much research we find that Slymansdale is in fact was a house on the road to Baldwin's Gate area. according to the 1889 Ordanance Survey from the  Staffordshire records office) on a road now called Camp Hill.. In The Parish of Maer. Staffordshire... On further research and investigation I have validated that Hugh ( Frazier) married Mary Ferguson (recorded as Furgason) on the 26 May 1831 in Wednesbury after Banns... Mary was the daughter of Phoebe Ferguson and her father is unknown...

Further investigation on Hugh's death from my research shows that he could have worked on the Rail...as I have a copy of the Coroner's Report dated October 1837 that he was died as a result of being run over by a cartwheel....

Mary & Hugh had the following children.
Alexander. Baptised 20 May 1832 High Offley. Staff
Anne            "         13 Feb 1834     "
William         "             May 1836   Maer.  Staff
and Elizabeth          26 Nov 1837.

Poor Mary not only lost her husband in October 1837, but was  8 months Pregnant with Elizabeth when Hugh died... I have copies from the parish Register validating their Baptism...According to Find My Past Burial Transcription.... Hugh Fraser ( name change again to what it is today) was aged 37 years at  the time of his death. he is buried in St Peter's Maer Anglican Church on 16 October 1837.

Again I apologise for taking up so much time and patience of this group, but as you can see I have in the past 3-4 years made a few little steps from the previous posts and it has taken me all of this time to get to where I am at present....If I could find out about Hugh's parents, who they were, where was he born? and is he a Scot or Irish do to the name changing all the time....

Thank you so much

Sincerely,

Faysie

From your previous post - their children named as

Alexander Frazer Baptised  High Offley 1832
Anne          "                    "                      1834
William      Fraser "           Maer             1836
Elizabeth Ferguson Fraser  Maer          1837

A long shot do you think the first two children may have been named after Hugh's parents  ?

family search has this christening entry

Hugh FRASER 18 Oct 1800 Inverness,SCOTLAND
parents named as Alexr. & Ann Cuming

Dear Ladyhawk,
Thank you for your reply... this could be a possibility and one that I shall follow up.... I have to say that from all the research I and my Late Cousin have done on our " Fraser Family" the Traditional names have carried on to the present day... names such as William, Alexander, Hugh,( no Elizabeth at all...and so on...

Thank You
