I tried to post and what it said was it was too big. Maybe I can try and post half of the certificate just so people can see some more of the hand writing.

So James was b c 1830

Have you found on any census where he was born as I'm sure with knowing his father's name & mother's forename you will be able to find a birth to match what looks like her surname?

Knowing where he was born is the key to your answer as the writing is not legible really.......it could say so many names which are all a guess.

Who were the witnesses to the marriage of James & Mary Jane?

Were they on a scottish census 1851 which should give a location of birth?

Have you found James on 1841 in Scotland?

Was he with his parents in 1841 & were they around in 1851 after James married?

James Dunbar death was registered by his wife Mary and the other witness I can't make out. It is on the attachment I posted though. James was born in Ireland according to the 1851 and 1861 census. The marriage record I have was a parish record of proclamation of marriage so I have no witnesses. The marriage record number is 565/00 0020 0274. I have not yet found 1841 census in Scotland or Ireland.

There's no copyright issue in posting certificates, and as long as they are not of living people it's legally allowed to post them on the internet. 
They do take up too much room if posted in their entirety, so cropping them and posting them half at a time is the solution to that problem.

I think it is McEwan, comparing it with the capital E in Exhaustion.
