Cheers Capetown.
Will see about joining forest of dean, and look into CLDS.
The birth i am really trying to find as i said is my G Granddad, the oldest son of John and Elizabeth who was born 4 years before they married, the last line in your last post gives me more to work on as all papers i have seen for him, even his police record, states he was born in Bristol, now with Elizabeths parents details that might help.
many thanks again

On the CLDS

1861 Census

Name: Elizabeth D POWELL
County: Warwickshire
Event type: Census
Event date: 1861
Sub-District: 1 Campden
Parish: Ebrington
Gender: Female
Age : 2
Relationship to Head of Household : Daughter
Birthplate: Hidcote, Gloucestershire
Schedule type: Household

Had a look at all my Gloucestershire Family History CD Discs and DUDLEY isn't a common name - there are only 13 burials from 1800 listed and just this one at Chipping Campden

Elizabeth DUDLEY 17 March 1814 aged 85, residence: Broad Campden - Chipping Campden

Family surnames are often passed through generation after generation - this has happened in my own family tree.

You may like to try contacting the Bristol Register Office to see if Frederick's birth was registered but didn't make it on to the main GRO register.

Contact details:-

If you are applying for a certificate from 1837 to November 1940 please email register.office@bristol.gov.uk to check availability. Include name, date and place of birth.

Cost will be £10 plus £1.50 p & p

Hi Girl Guide.
Didn't realize that births may not have made it onto main GRO reister, will try your suggestion asap.
I have already requested two certificates from Bristol register office for possibilities but both turned out not to be my Frederick

I notice that, on the 1881 census, Elizabeth is living in Birmingham at the Great Western Hotel.

Is it possible that Frederick James could have been born in Birmingam?

And indeed, there is a Frederick James Powell, age 3, on the 1881 census.
A visitor, living in Northfield, Worcestershire with Amy Powell (12) and Fanny Powell (8 ) together with John W Davies and Fanny Davies.

Hi.
Yes i know about Elizabeth at the great western hotel. The rest of your info is new to me, so thanks for that, will try to look into it more.
Don't know why i can't find this info, maybe i am just not very good at searching the records.
Its just that everything that i have found about Frederick says he was born in Bristol, even his police service record.
Its just that since he was born 4 years before his mother married his "father" i am just not convinced that his biological father is the person we know as his father. That's why i would really like to find his birth certificate.
