Edward Morton married Ellen Elizabeth Ashe on 27 Mar 1883 in New Ross, Co Wexford. Witnesses John M Ashe and Hannah Ashe. Edwards father Thomas Morton - farmer. Ellens father was Thomas Ashe. Edward was a gardener.

Later: Edward was a Land Steward

3 children according to the censuses but I can only find two birth records
Mary Elizabeth Morton aka May b 1884
Thomas William Morton b 1886
Edward Morton b abt 1888 in Louth

Now the interesting record I found is the death of "Edward Fawcett Morton" in Priory Street, New Ross on 21 Aug 1921. The death age is out by about 7 years but everything else fits. May Elizabeth Morton is the informant.

I can only find one Edward Morton born in Louth in the 1901 census. listed as the son of Edward in Kilkenny

While there are records for a sister in law and a niece, they have a different surname- Collier.
Edward Morton aged 12 is not Edwards son, but a nephew, born Edward Guy Morton 21/3/1888 in Louth to Thomas Morton land agent and Millicent Guy of Townly Hall.

Which records have the Collier surname in them?

So Ellen Morton nee Ash and her husband Edward Morton adopt Edward Guy Morton as his mother had died 1 day after his birth. That makes sense. She had two other recently born children and may have been able to nurse him.

Hello! I am trying to research the Morton name, My great great grandfather is supposedly named Edward Morton, Some what elusive in the records though. His son Johnston Morton, my great Grand father, B 1825 is reputedly from Longford, be that town or county, I don't know. He names Longford on census returns for his Liverpool  part of his life and at his marriage he names his father as Edward Morton, deceased, a Sergeant in the Irish Constabulary, no records seem to exist of Edward in his date range in the RIC. Johnston married Clarinda Gallately in Clonmel in 1848 and it seems they had a son Joannes (John)in 1855, he doesn't figure in their lives after their immigration to Liverpool, possible dead or adopted..?? Can you point me in the direction of any records available to pin down the family in Longford? It seems Morton is a name common in the area but my branch is just not visible.

My list of Mortons keeps growing but with the total loss of the Shrule COI records finding more Mortons is proving increasingly difficult. Putting them into the correct families is even more difficult.

 

So what is in the earlier totally lost registers that were not totally lost??

From the staff at the RCB they stated: the Shrule records covering Baptisms 1727-1882, Marriages 1727-1846 and Burials 1795-1904 were destroyed in the fire in the Public Records Office in 1922. All that remains are Baptisms 1878-1931 and Marriages 1845-1999. I have looked at these records and found no entries for either name - Morton and Fawcett

As I have about 6 different family lines whose records were destroyed in 1922 it has created big gaps in that part of my family history. I contacted the RCB again recently because another line of mine had records were destroyed but subsequent material was found. The subsequent material related to records for wealthy people so again another dead end. Could they have found more records since I last emailed them?

I have discovered a name which some one might recognise, from 1848 in Carrick on SuirFanny Morton, daughter of Edward Morton, he is described as variously as a Gate Keeper or Wood Ranger on 2 marriage certificates, one for his son Johnston marrying Clarinda Gallately and the other for Fanny marrying John Williams. The marriage certificates are attached if anyone has an interest in these Mortons it would be good to hear from you.

I dont think I have come across Fanny Morton before. I cant see any other Edward Mortons that could be her father than the one who is the father of Thomas and Johnston Morton.

I wonder if Edward Morton died after the birth of Fanny Morton and thats the reason hes not in the Tithe indexes? Or would his occupation mean hes not registered in those?

I photographed the headstone of Thomas Morton and Mary Fawcett when I was in Longford a few months back. They are buried right next to a Thomas Morton (possibly an uncle or grandfather?). Where is Edward buried?

Here lieth the remains of Thomas Morton, late of Toome, who departed this life 22 May 1811, aged 47 years.

Also his daughter Anne Morton departed this life 26th June 1811 aged 21 years.  Also his wife Jane departed this life 20th February 1846 aged 70 years.
