Corneys in Guisborough
« on: Monday 21 December 15 18:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to find a bit more information about a pair of my 4xgreat grandparents, John and Elizabeth Corney. He was a grover and they had a number of children in Guisborough. Eldest was Mary 1797, followed by William 1798?, Hannah 1799, Ann 1803, John 1806?, Elizabeth 1806, Catherine 1809 and Robert 1812.
I can find no marriage for John and Elizabeth, though have found one for a John Corney and Ann Baker. As far as I can tell, he died in 1839.
As for wife Elizabeth, going by the 1841 and 1851 cenauses, she was born in Yarm 1769. She died in Darlington, Durham in 1852. She may be Elizabeth Bellwood, daughter of William Bellwod, born Yarm in 1769, but being unable to find any marriage I can not be sure of this.
Any information relating to this couple, their parents and children would be most welcome.

Yes, that will be son Robert. I am not sure if Harland is related or not.

Hi,

The John CORNEY who died in 1839 is buried in Danby, his MI reads

Erected in memory of William CORNEY who d. 25 Jan 1842 aged 89 yrs. Also John CORNEY his son who d. 7 Feb 1839 aged 53 years. Also Nelly CORNEY who d 25 Oct 1861 aged 70.

I think that John is too young to have a child in 1797

This MI in Guisborough is more likely to be the one you are seeking

Erected to the memory of John CORNEY who d 12 May 1825 aged 52

There are two graves adjacent to this one for

Robert CORNEY d 10 Jun 1805 aged 64. Also Elizabeth, his wife d 28 Dec 1808 aged 62

Anne the wife of Robert CORNEY d 22 Apr 1810 aged 29 yrs. Also their son and daughter who died in infancy

These could possibly be related, maybe his parents and sister in law??

There are some more MIs for CORNEY in Guisborough which may be of interest. Shout out if you would like the information

Hi Nannawilk, thank you for that, I certainly would be interested in other MIs from Guisborough of the Corneys. I wonder if I have got two different John Corneys mixed up as one person. I feel certain that my John must have been alive in 1837 as he is mentioned as a grocer on his daughter's marriage records, with no indication that he is already dead...Elizabeth Corney married Thomas Hawkins in 1837, later census records show her birth place to be Guisborough and there is a record of her birth in Guisborough in 1806. Not being able to find a marriage for the John Corney who is Elizabeth's father is quite frustrating.

Hi again,

I've sent you a pm with CORNEY MIs for Guisborough.

Just like to mention that, although the marriage certificate does not say her father is deceased, and also gives his occupation, this is not proof that he was still alive. I have seen quite a few where I know for certain the father was deceased but you would never know it from marriage certificate.

Strangely all the baptisms for the children of John and Elizabeth give his occupation as 'flax dresser' and the burial for John in 1825 gives his occupation as 'flax dresser'. Wonder where 'grocer' comes into the equation??

Cheers

Nannawilk

Thanks Nannawilk, found yesterday in the London Gazette 1834 that he was a flax-dresser, rope-maker, grocer and agent for Phoenix Assurance. Also a John Corney, grocer, is giving evidence at Old Bailey in 1852 (though not necessarily my man). Intriguingly in Whitby a John Corney and Son, Grocer, appears to have been operating into the 1880s and I wonder if there is a connection there or just a coincidence of name and occupation.
