Sophia Mabey
« on: Sunday 20 December 15 22:43 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon,

I am trying to find Sophia Mabey b.13 Feb 1831 in Devon her mother was Harriet Croom and her father Charles Mabey. On 9th December 1840 she sailed with her family on the Olympus to Port Nicolson - Wellington - New Zealand arriving on 20th April 1841. There is a comment on the passenger list " Sophia 10years left behind in WA ". I imagine she was left behind to become a domestic servant. I have looked at every record possible that I can find with no luck, has anyone any ideas, maybe she was adopted by another family. The Mabey family history is well documented but Sophia has vanished.

Thank you,
Catherine.

I think the "WA" is someone's initials.  A note on page 328 says that she was landed at Gravesend.  I would say she was probably sick.

Yes,  I agree with Dundee re that being initials of the scribe making the note on that record...

(Sophia 10 years left behind.  W.A.)

..... her father Charles Mabey.

Thank you,
Catherine.

Was Charles her father?  What surname was she baptised under?  You would need to know what surname she was using as an adult in order to find her.

There is a Sophia MABEY in Chelsea, London in 1841.  She is aged 9, not born in the county, servant at a school.

Think above marriage (at Romsey, Hampshire), is possibly that of a widowed Sophia MABEY ?

Sophia COLLINS - born circa 1821,  Middlesex - London (Chelsea) (Father:  John COLLINS)
married William MABEY - 1846

1861 - Sophia MABEY , widow ... at Hampshire (parish of Millbrook) with her various MABEY children (incl. dau. Jane)

1881 - Sophia HALL, widow ... Hampshire (parish of Millbrook) ... with dau. Jane MABY [sic].

Hello
I have done quite a lot of research on the Mabey family and have an extensive family tree of the family collected from contacts over the years.  My connection to this family is through my mother's mother's mother Alice Maud Mabey.
Sophia CROOM, baptised 13 Feb 1830 in Branscombe, Devon, England is the illegitimate dau of Harriet CROOM, the father is supposed to be Ellis Bartlett DEAN, a Blacksmith.
Harriet did not marry Charlie MABEY until 11 Aug 1837 after he had come to Devon from Dorset.  He was a Flax Merchant, and there was a big rope-making industry in that area at the time.
Sophia does not appear in the Branscombe 1851 census but may have married by then.
A contact from the DEAN family checked all her sources and could not find any trace of Sophia amongst their family either.

It is 'FS' which was used for 'Female Servant', but the information on census records being what it was, it may not be correct.
