1851 Census GARRETT

Please can you find John GARRETT, born about 1782, probably Chesham. 
His wife and daughters are in Chesham in 1851, but he apparently is not.  May be in Amersham, where he had business interests.
Was a Tanner until at least 1842.  Described as a Gentleman in various references 1847 - 1863.

There is no-one of that name on the 1851 census for Buckinghamshire near that age - the nearest John Garrett (Garritt/ Garret/ Garrott) in age, was 38. Are you sure your John Garrett was still alive in 1851. Census enumerators have been known to make errors and record widows as wives.

He is listed in several trade directories post 1851, so he must have been out-of-county at the time of the census.

Depending on the date of trade directories, there was a delay from when the information for the trade directory was collected to when the trade directory was published which would allow for out of date entries to remain.
On a more modern day comparison, after my father died my mother never changed the telephone directory entry. It remained in his name until she died.

Good point Valda.
Directories show him in 1852 and 1863 - though you can never be 100% sure it is the same person.
The Ancestry.co.uk 1861 index also seems to show him.  I hope to be able to check this out next weekend.

I would also check out the surnames Pegg in Chesham and John Garrett on the A2A website where record offices are using lottery money to index some of their holdings. The Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies holds quite a few records - mostly mortgages but Hertfordshire Record Office holds these documents

Thank you very much for all the information and advice.  Whilst I had come across some of the data, there is also some that is new to me.

John William Garrett Pegg inherited much of John Garrett's wealth. He later changed his name to J W Garrett-Pegge, bought property from the Duke of Bedford and took himself up in the world.  His family still live in John Garrett's house in Chesham.  Garrett's Close in Chesham is said to be named after the family.

I'm trying to find the apparent link between this family and the Garretts of Hudnall/Little Gaddesden.  No doubt a visit to The Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies will prove helpful, when I can arrange that.

this is VERY late I know, I came across this regarding the Garrett Pegges. The Pegges were descended from the Pegges of Shirley Derbyshire via Melbourne Derbyshire and that the Garretts were in fact Newells from Hadnall, in the parish of Edlesborough, Bucks, in 1487.
