Evan Bryant
« on: Saturday 12 December 15 08:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi.  My great great uncle Evan Bryant married Lydia Andrews.  His parents were Morgan and Catherine (nee Watkins) Bryant.  I have info that they came out to Australia on the ship Canaan in 1863.  The passenger list states Andrew and Catherine after their names and I am presuming these were their children.  Now I have been told that Catherine passed away before they came to Aust.  This led me to try and find out if maybe they had another daughter and also named her Catherine.  Is there any way I can find this out?

Other names on the passenger list was his brother David and his wife and two children.

The only death of a Catherine Bryant registered in Glamorgan's 1858-1863 was Catherine Julia Bryant in Merthyr Tydfil Jul-Sep 1860. Her birth had been registered Jan-Mar 1860. Further Catherine Bryant births were registered in Merthyr Tydfil Oct-Dec 1861 and Apr-Jun 1863. Without further details, it is anyone's guess if these are of any relevance to you. Only copy certificates would provide conclusive proof.

I note that the marriage of Evan and Lydia was registered in Cardiff and I presume it is Andrew's birth that was registered in Abergavenny.

There is a birth index in the January quarter of 1860 in Merthyr Tydfil for Catherine Julia Bryant.  Merthyr Tydfil is the correct registration district for Gelligaer.  The reference is from FreeBMD:-

Births Mar 1860
Surname:  Bryant
First names:  Catherine Julia
District:  Merthyr Tydfil
Vol:  11a
Page:  306  [FreeBMD gives pages 305 & 306.  306 is the correct entry]

There is a death for this child in the September quarter 1860.  The reference from FreeBMD is:-

Deaths Sep 1860
Surname:  Bryant
First names:  Catherine Julia
District:  Merthyr Tydfil
Vol:  11a
Page:  128

There are births of Catherine Bryant recorded in Merthyr Tydfil District in December quarter 1861 and June quarter 1863.  The references are:-

Births Dec 1861
Surname:  Bryant
First names:  Catherine
District:  Merthyr Tydfil
Vol:  11a
Page:  344

and

Births Jun 1863
Surname:  Bryant
First names:  Catherine
District:  Merthyr Tydfil
Vol:  11a
Page:  308

I have not been able to find parish records of baptisms or burial for Catherine Bryant.  Perhaps someone else may be able to do that for you.  Otherwise it could mean obtaining the certificates to clear up the query.

Just a thought - Evans brother David & his family were on the same ship to Australia.  Evan also had a sister Catherine could she have been the family member shown after Andrew?  I have had a quick look to trace this Catherine in Wales after the 1861 census (when she was with her mother) but have not found her as yet.

In addition immediately below Catherine on the ship list is a Thomas Bevan, there is a Thomas Beven with the family on the 1851 census shown as nephew.

Just wondering if yuo had seen this : http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3073428/3073432/11/

It shuold lead to an image, but isn;t working for me today, so here;'s the etxt

The Merthyr Telegraph and General Advertiser for the Iron Districts of South Wales
25th July 1863
TESTIMONIALS. Testimonials are now almost a necessity in this progressive era, worthy or unworthy, all alike get some testimony of their worth on leaving a town or parting with friends. On this occasion we have to record a testimonial to two working men, worthy of the tribute presented, and the respect they were held in by masters and men. The two we have the pleasure in naming are brothers, Evan and David Bryant, overmen in the collieries of the Rhymney Iron Company, and who take their departure this week for Australia. The testimonial consisted of a purse of money, each amounting in the aggregate to nearly £15, and which has been cheerfully subscrioed amongst the poor colliers of the pits of which they were overmen, assisted by the respected coal and mine agent, R. Bedlington, Esq. The presentation took place on Thursday last, at the residence of Mr. D. Bryant, Church-street, and was attended by a deputation on behalf of the subscribers, who briefly explained the object of their pleasing mission, and hoped that the most sanguine expectations of the intending emigrants would be realised in the far off land to which they were going, that they took with them the best wishes of the workmen generally, in testimony of which they had the pleasure of presenting each of them with a purse of gold. Mr. Evan Bryant, followed by Mr. David Bryant, acknowledged the compliment paid them. and thanked them all sincerely for the very handsome present; after which the deputation left, wishing them God speed.

There's also some family announcements

April 1858
BRYANT-ANDREWS. April 12 (by license), at the Wesley Chapel, Cardiff, by the Rev. Everard Vigis, Mr. Evan Bryant, colliery overseer, Rhymney, to Lydia, youngest daughter of Mr. John Andrews, grocer and provision merchant, of this town.

March 1859
BRYANT.—Feb. 27, at Rhymney, the wife of Mr. Evan Bryant, colliery overseer (and daughter of Mr. J. Andrews, Frederick-street, Cardiff), of a son.

Thank you so much for this Mabel.  It is unbelievable how helpful people in this group are.
David is my great great grandfather with Evan being his older brother.  Fantastic.

Merry Christmas to you and yours and hope the New Year brings you much happiness.

Have found this on the net:

http://murphyancestry.com/getperson.php?personID=I284&tree=tree1

This says that David was on the Canaan with 3 brothers?  We know that Evan was one brother, perhaps Catherine was regarded as another brother?  I have found the death of a Samuel Bryant in Lucknow (where the above says David was residing) although the age does not actually match Davids brother Samuel.  The death date says he was born 1818 but the 1841 Wales census has his dob as 1826.  I know that the 1841 census dob dates are rounded after age 15 but Evan is shown as 14 years & Samuel 15 years an 1818 dob would have made him 23 years?

Death notice for Samuel

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/62015616?searchTerm=%22David%20Bryant%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc|||l-state=New+South+Wales|||l-category=Article

But if correct then Samuel was also on the Canaan?

Edit:  Just noticed that the online tree has a Morgan Bryant dying in Australia in 1883 so perhaps he was on the Canaan making 3 brothers with Samuel?  Morgan is not with the family in 1841 census.

Further Edit:  Just noticed that this is your tree Dot - should have paid more attention!

I notice from your online tree that you have a William Bryant 1821, but not the William Bryant 1835:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F72L-HJ4
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X1B5-J8B

This William is on the 1841 & 1851 census with the family.  There is an online tree on A..ty which has him travelling to the USA in 1854.  But this tree is a bit mixed up with him both living in the UK and US at the same time.
