The closest address to Shoreditch could be Middlesex Street. E6 is East Ham and NW1 Camden and E3 Mile End. I googled in Middlesex Street and there is a building with similar columns to the on behind your grandfather

This is the Middlesex Street location on Streetview. Number 124 has been rebuilt but the building next door looks right https://goo.gl/maps/HftvsYha2vv

Thanks it looks good, i guess next step would be to see if that street used to run a bus service?

Yes, good idea, as there is a bus stop in the background. It's a red stop so you should check if buses ran down the possible streets you have. It is likely, in the '50s, that many bus services travelled that way as it has always been a predominantly poor + working class area so doubt people had cars.

According to this 1952 map route 78 stopped on this street: http://www.busmap.co.uk/Downloads/Sales/Historical/1952%20Greater%20London%20Bus%20Map.pdf

Its the most convincing location I have so far. I think i will check directory for the building either side of 'Davant' next to it to see if they match up.

If we have the right place then your grandad is standing outside and facing the Shooting Star pub.

The only thing im not so sure about, is the pub on the corner, it looks very different, obviously it may have had a facial refit. But i dont think it looks like a pub in my photo.

There was me thinking that Davant was now Nandos. It's not. Davant was number 124 which is  now Ladbrokes and another firm; then there is the Chinese at 126, then there is the Woodin's Shades pub on the corner with Bishopsgate.   I think the pub looks very like the building behind the soldier in your picture.

Afraid I can't help as to where this is.  But, I wonder what the small pieces of paper they are holding are for.   Do you know?

Could they be collecting their demob outfits?  In which case it would be local to where he lived.

Someone else just suggested it could be demob, and/or near a demob center, i guess thats another thing to look into now!
