Rope Walk, Sunbury, U.D.
« on: Saturday 05 December 15 06:10 GMT (UK) »
My grandmother's 1916 death certificate states that she died, aged 40, at 17 Rope Walk, Sunbury U.D., away from her own home and family in Bow.  I am trying to find out who lived at No 17, or what it may have been.  From my view 'down under', Rope Walk appears on todays Google to be a very narrow walled pathway without any houses.  The closest I have come to identifying any buildings is the 1911 UK Census which lists a family living at 119 Rope Walk.  Does anyone have any knowledge of Rope Walk or its inhabitants around 1916?

"119" could be the enumerator's record number rather than a house number. There were not many dwellings on Rope Walk.

Looking at WW1 service records, the following gave their address as Rope Walk, Sunbury:

- William Cook (Rosedale Cottage), chauffeur aged 37 in March 1916, wife Jean nee Allen
- George Cosgrove (2 Rope Walk Cottages), butcher aged 20 in November 1914, mother Sarah

Per the electoral rolls 1911-1915:

- Ernest Clark
- Henry Kingston
- Henry George Stroud
- Elizabeth Morgan
- Alfred Russell
- William Townsend
- Rachel Wright

Wow, I hadn't thought about using WWI service records - learn something new every day - Thanks for that ShaunJ.  I'll start doing a check on the names in the lists and see if anything or anyone familiar emerges.

I have already checked out the family in Rope Walk listed in the 1911 census, but no joy from that investigation, ciderdrinker.

rosie99, the informant on the death certificate was her sister, who was living in outer Surrey, with her husband and children throughout the war period and appeared to have no connection with Sunbury.

And, yes, Imber, I have read up on the background to 'Rope Walks', but there is no doubt that the location was Sunbury U. D. (Urban District) which, from 1894, comprised the town and parish of Sunbury-on-Thames until it was expanded in 1930.

Thanks everyone, JB.

Thanks for the 1901 list, ShaunJ - will add the names to my list of suspects.  No luck as yet, but still digging.
