James Lymer - criminal record

I have a record of a James Lymer (b 1862 Hanley to John and Elizabeth).  He seems to be an habitual criminal
Epiphany 1879 case 42 felony
Michaelmas 1879 case 48 felony
Imprisoned 30/12/78, 13/10/79, 30/6/81, 4/1/83 and 9/12/90 (although at home for the 1881 census)
I have located prison photos with 4 prisoner number 5935, 3641, 3910 and 2327 for 1879, 80, 84 and 96.  Do you have a different prisoner number on each imprisonment and are all of these my chap?

I would guess you had a different number for each occasion but a lot of the dates you mention are fairly close together so do the photographs look the same?

You are lucky to have them even if he was a criminal!

I haven't ordered them - I was trying to find a few clues as to whether they are all him before I spend the £s!

The criminal records on FindMyPast have a lot of information on previous convictions, distinguishing features etc which should enable you tie it all together. Also on FindMyPast and/or BNA are contemporary newspaper reports which will tell you about the offences committed.

It probably is the same guy its only in the last few years that it was introduced that prisoners should keep the same prison number during their repeat incarcerations

If you haven't already ordered anything yet then one of records in the Crime, Prisons & Punishment section on FindMyPast might be a good starting point.

It is an 1896 prison record that has been mistranscribed as James Lyner, but looks like your man since the list of offences starts with stealing raisons in 1878. It lists and describes all his offences beginning with 2 in 1878, 1879, 1881, 1883, 1885, 1890 and then the 1896 offence.

I've submitted a name correction to FindMyPast.
