Could this be Shoreham?
« on: Friday 15 July 05 09:49 BST (UK) »
I would be very grateful if Sussexites could look at the second picture here (reply 5):

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,73293.msg301189.html#msg301189

Could the photo have been taken in Shoreham-by-Sea?  My thinking is that the building with the tall chimney could be the Albion Steam Brewery and the white building the Crown and Anchor - pictures 1 & 5 here:

Does anybody recognise the location?  Any comments welcome.

Thanks
Deborah

I've just checked and I think my link to West Sussex Past hasn't quite worked as intended.  A search of Albion under Quicksearch will find pictures 1 & 5.

Hi Deborah

I went through Shoreham yesterday, and made a determined effort to see if I could spot anywhere where this photo could have been taken. There is very little of the area that is not now covered by buildings so it is very difficult to say exactly, but I couldn't see any part of town where there would be three hills visible in the background as in the picture. There is a part of the road between Portslade and Shoreham wher you can see two hills, but they didn't look anything like as high as those ones. There may be some perspective distortion, but I doubt it.

If it was Shoreham, I would have thought that the hill to the left would probably have to be the one where Lancing college building is located. Its quite a prominent structure, and would have been visible even from that angle. Although I don't know when that building was built.

Of course, I couldn't see every part of town, and this picture may have been taken in an area and at an angle where housing now stands, but I was on the top deck of a double decker bus and got a pretty clear view of the surrounding area, but nothing seemed to match with this picture.

Hopefully someone with a more intimate knowledge of the town in the past will be able to say yes or no with more authority, but I'd have to say that I don't think this is Shoreham.

Glen

Thanks Glen for taking the time to look for me.  I came across some pictures of the Albion Brewery and wondered if the photo might have been taken in Shoreham - but it could be anywhere.  The only person I can identify is my grandmother (front, middle, looking round) and I thought the location may give me some clues about the others.  I have sent a copy to West Sussex Past - so fingers crossed!

Thanks again.

I know shoreham very well.  I am 100% certain that is not Shoreham.  The brewery you speak of was amongst buildings. The topography is very different.

The best source of historic photos of Shoreham-By-Sea is http://www.shorehambysea.com/shoreham-by-sea-history-portal.html

Thanks, Spinalman.  I had forgotten I had considered Shoreham.

Hi, I grew up in Shoreham. I agree with Spinalman that this is not Shoreham, it is not anything I recognise at all.

Hello Dimps,

I live quite close to Shoreham at present and cannot find any resemblance to your photo. I think there is general agreement on that.

The first photo in the previous message looks to me to have been taken on the limestone pavement on the Great Orme in Llandudno. I have walked over this many times when I lived there for some years. I don't know if you ever identified the location.

Thank you all very much for your replies.  Great Orme Llandudno looks good.
